Talking

So I got brave and decided to drill my own holes!
My Dad drilled the 4 1/2" holes last week for my LED taillights, but it was too damn cold that day to worry about doing the reverse lights too.
So I got brave and drilled them myself today
Not sure what I think about the blingish trim rings yet but I had to use them for the reverse lights, I might just paint them black. Part of me sorta likes them though 'cause they look sorta old schoolish

Sorry about the pic but it was dark by the time I was done.

Parts list..........

4" STT Led lights from Grote
http://www.grote.com/cgi-bin/product...t_number=53252

3 1/2" White LED Marine courtsey light from Maxxima
http://www.maxxima.com/images/pu-m-courtesylights-5.gif

The trim rings are made by Lifetime Plastic Lugnut Covers
I used the 4" bezel and the 2" bezel

Plus the standard rubber grommets for the STT's and the pigtails as well.

For the reverse lights I completely dremmeled the flange ring off and glued the bezel to the face of the light. I did not want a white trim ring and to use the bezel that was intended for the light would have made it to big to fit where I wanted it to.

For the holes I used a 4 1/2" hole saw for the taillights and a 2 3/4" for the reverse lights. I probably should have used a 2 1/2" saw then I could have used thinner bezels.

I should also add that for some reason I did not have to install resistors or modify the relay to make the LED's flash at the normal rate. I have no idea why my mod did not require this since every write up I have read says you need to do it.
I speculated that maybe people have just done it without testing them first and don't know that it doesn't need to be done, and Randy said it may have just been the type/model of light I used. It may just apply to the 03 and possibly 04 model years. Who knows, they work, that is all I care about

Thumbs up

Looks great! Even with the chrome bezels.

That license plate held on with baby bungees? That's how and where mine's right now.

lol how did you know!
I am trying to think up a way to mount it there using the big bolt that comes through the centre of the spare for my tire carrier I just haven't thought too much about it yet,=.

RJ, all together the lights, pigtails, grommets and bezels cost about $160 Canadian.
Each light was around $25 I know there are cheaper ones but I had to use the super thin ones becuase of all the evap crap behind the pass side light on the 03/04's. Then there was all the other misc crap.

</font>
That's just about how I'm going to do mine actually. Oh yeah, I'm talking about my XJ here, not our TJ... I'm going to rig up something with a pin so it's easy to remove when I need to pull off my spare tire (which isn't very often actually). Something similar to this:

I may actually just buy that kit because it's only like $35 from Quadratec (doesn't include light though). I've already got some steel plate to mount the license plate to, and I'll probably pick up an LED license plate light to go with it.

This will show them a little better:

When I do mine I'm going to go with this lighted frame from AEV. I think I'm going to try to attach it right to the factory plastic holder thingie.

I normally like the black trim look, but I agree, the silver/chrome looks good with those lights. Kinda old school or something.
