Got it up to around 60 MPH tonight. I made sure to hit a few bumpy railroad crossings and it went over like butta...I'm definitely diggin the stiffer springs up front. Drove it down to the local gas station and the attendant had a big WTF face going on...oh well.

The Creepies definitely go down the road just as well if not better than the Iroks.

It may have been better practice for JV if the train was actually on the tracks while you were crossing...

Well. We will find that out soon enough. I've still got roughly 1" of the bump travel that hasn't been used yet, so the next week and a half should prove to be some good research.

Got really nothing done today. I started with the best of intentions and then had my buddy Chris Demartini swing by the shop to drop off his quad to get towed out to JV, and productivity went to ****.

Tim and I both have agreed that the front of an XJ doesn't really lend itself to tube work. It's way too square. When I went to bend up the front vertical pieces, I placed the bends at the same location as the factory lines in the sheetmetal, so that when I put fenders back on this thing it stands a chance of looking decent.

I got my replacement headlight bezels and front park lamps today, so I was able to make the front end a little more complete. Part of what Tim and I did involved trimming back the header panel and eliminating the side marker lights. Here's what that looks like:

Rough placement of everything:

The idea was that the whole header panel would be protected, but with a minimal amount of tube. If you look at the passenger side, you can see the whole header panel and bezel is exposed, but it's protected on the bottom via the flat plate and on the side by the vertical bar. If by chance something gets in there and pokes out the marker lamp or headlight, I really think there's no decent tube work that could prevent that anyway.

Future plans include putting a little filler plate between the header panel and the tube. Just not a priority right now.

Got a bunch more done tonight...almost ready to leave.

I'm finally getting rid of my homebrew drive flanges. They worked OK, but the bolts kept loosening up, and on the last trip this resulted in two broken ones. Not cool. Plus I never got around to the whole seal/snap ring thing.

I picked up a set of 35-spline Dodge flanges from C & M Performance Machine (MAD MAC on Pirate). Much better.

High-grade 12-point bolts, with the heads recessed to take the load...snap ring fits, and the center boss has an o-ring seal around it.

Finished getting everything in the fenderwell area cleaned up & painted. Also fixed the cracked trackbar mount and added a little reinforcement on the back.

Gettin' it all back together...

As it sits now.

Tomorrow I have to finish making the new skid plate, and I'm gonna try to lower the back end about an inch or so to get rid of most of the forward rake. Then it gets loaded in the trailer and shipped out to CA.

As good as it's gonna get for now. Didn't quite get everything done that I wanted to but it'll work.

Last reported somewhere on the Pennsy turnpike around 10:30 PM.
