Default What did I do now?

Engine woes rnd. 2...

I was rallying on WOT and everything seemed fine, when i let off the throttle, it started backfiring way bad and running extremely rich. now it sounds like maybe a cylinder isnt firing cause its running really ruff, has power loss and smells funnier than usual.

any guesseS? where do I start?

Check for oil in your coolant and coolant in your oil. Check your plugs to see if they have nasty sh1t all over em....or that the important parts are still even there. Run a compression test. Tear it apart and see what you blew up. Just swap the sh1t for something bulletproof since you obviously abuse the crap outta that motor.

Hey sounds like Deja-vu!

When I first installed the 5.13's in the YJ I went to the river and found a huge stretch of flat sand. I hammered the throttle and rowed through the gears until shifting out of third at 75 or so. After that the YJ ran like absolute shiat. I drove home with about 4 cyl firing for about 2 hours on the interstate . I got home and tore the fuel rail apart and literally dumped nasty hard shiat out of the fuel rail. I had every injector from the 3 through 6 clogged (I pulled them and they were nasty). After cleaning everything multiple times (the fuel rail, injectors, and a new fuel filter) I put everything back together. After a couple hundred miles it happened again. I cleaned everything again and it went away.

I must have jarred some gunk loose would hitting the whoops at 60+

Not too hard.. only special tool is for the quick release on the fuel rail. The best way by far is to pull the head and manifolds as one with an engine lift.

remove crap on top of valve cover (cable, hoses, etc). Remove spark plug wires. Remove coolant hoses. Disconnect wiring from throttle body. Disconnect manifold from exhaust. Remove valve cover. Remove rocker arms and push rods (keep them in order too). Remove 12 point 1/2" bolts. Remove head and manifolds as a unit. Remove gasket. Clean gasket surfaces. Install new gasket, reverse operation. If you need the torque values for any bolts let me know.

$20g

There's a brand new NV4500 for sale near me for $1k. I'm tempted to snag it but I want a slushbox for what I'll be doing.

how crucial is it to drain the coolant from the block? WTF do you use to get that plug out? its square with a side length of .375"?

I have never drained it using the plug on the block. Just pull the lower rad hose. If you really want to get it all out, remove the water pump, and lift the truck from the rear.

Yeah. Never had a problem with that. It won't drain 100% of the coolant, but about 90% from the block. I tried to fool with the plugs on the block once and gave up. Not enough clearance and that odd size. If you really wanted to perhaps grind down a small socket extension or an adapter.

Are you getting blow by from the dipstick?

Did you ever get the problem with your NO and fuel fixed?

If there is no blow buy your pistons and rings should be fine. Hopefully all it is is a head gasket. PM me your email and I can send you the directions for the torque sequence and values for the head if you want. The torque goes in steps. Also, you might want to consider going with a Mopar performance gasket as it is thinner and will yield higher compression. Don't know if your NOS will play well with a higher compression though.

Also, I forgot to mention that you need to put some thread sealant on the front most driver side bolt. And it would be best to use new head bolts as they are torque to yield.

I've taken the head off my XJ so much I could probably have it done in 3 hours.

When you pull the head. You might see the head gasket blow out or something else.

Uhoh.. was it run with coolant in the cylinder? I'm hopping that piston wasn't hyrdolocked.

Try to vacuum all the coolant out and then change your oil when finished.
