Angry Advise for rebuilding an I6 engine.

Well, I was about to re-lift my jeep and re-gear, thats just a dream now. Sounds like something is all out of wack in my engine, and to me sounds almost like something to do with a rod. Well anyway I need to know whats the best way of finding out where the sound is comen from? In Park you hear it, as you put it into gear and tap the gas you can realy hear it(DA). If I were to take off my vavle cover, can I see if anything is wrong by doing this? If the whole thing needs to be rebuilt(if block is in good shape) where is a place to find most of the parts to rebuild it. I dont want to make it 4.6 or whatever. Just upgrade the parts to better then stock. About what price range am I looking if I were to do the work? This is my only way of transportaion and have no way to leave my lil crap hole of a town. I just called to cancle my room for EJS, NO way I can afford to go if my jeep were to get runing by then anyways. This has been a fked up day for me.I am going to have to be able to oder this stuff online as seeing I cant get into town or anything. I guess I better get my bike out, going to be useing that for a very long time.

Drop a newer engine in it :duh:

Way easier than rebuilding an engine, plus it's CHEAPER!

I blew up my 96 engine, bought a 98 engine with 96,000 miles on it, put it in, and it was a done deal. The newer engine had more power and everything - pretty cool.

make sure your flexplate isn't cracked around the center first. (comparatively speaking, a cheap and easy fix)

when they go, they're loud as hell and the sound drastically changes when you go from park/neutral to being in gear.

the flexplate from any 91+ XJ will work for you.

But transmissions are a different story...
