Default Vermont Jeepers and other New England guys

It's a possibility I might be looking at some jobs in Vermont when I graduate in may. As such, I'd be taking my Jeep with me. Being that it has 35s, will I have any trouble inspecting it? Technically in Maine, 35" tires are illegal on my Jeep, I can only go to 31s legally.

I'm searching all over NE too, so if anyone has any comments on states for avoid for that reason (though I wouldn't count out a state JUST for lift laws but it would help sway the decision.)

TIA

from talkin to stevie it seams like VT only really cares that the needed equipment works (brakes are fresh, cat is there), your windsheild isn't cracked, and your tires don't stick out too far. :shrugs: hopefully stevie see's this thread

MA is a pain, tires cant stick out the fenders for than a inch and the total hight you can go(including hight added by tires) comes from this formula
(wheelbase*wheeltrack)/2200

but like in maine you can find guys who just dont give a damn, oh and we have emitions every other year

they are usually pretty good, if it's obviously illegal you'll get busted. if it's registered in VT they are anal about inspection stickers, and having both plates on. If it's 96 or newer i believe it has to be put on the "sniffer" to check emmisions. older than that they might look for a cat(depends on the shop) as long as your tires don't stick out too far there usually isn't a problem. The last time i got my VW inspected the shop checked lights, horn, e-brake and that was it. Quality of inspection really varies between shop, you can make that work for or against you. jeepnski's jeep would probably get busted for tires but half his tire sticks out beyond the flare. your 35x12.5 should be fine, they might make you put mud flaps on for inspection

as long as all the lights work, no cracks in the windshield that are in the wiper travel, has a sorta functional e-brake, doesn't look like a total POS it's not a problem

I'll have fender flares that should cover my tires fairly well, so I'm not too worried about that. As far as the total height is concerned, where do they measure that at? The roof? Or the frame rail?

Maine actually is pretty rough now, any sign you have ABS and NO ONE will inspect it if it's lifted or different size tires (nor will they install tires). That is slowly changing since I guess they changed the laws now (still haven't seen much official on it) but they are pretty anal. And nobody will inspect a non-ABS vehicle with tires over 2 sizes above stock. It's pretty dumb.

I'm not worried about the emissions, I have a cat and will continue to. Again, I'll have flares so I'm not worried about tires that much. I can deal with mud flaps.

Thanks for the input guys!

i've never seen anyone get busted for being too tall, the guy that inspected my trailer who worked at the shop had a F250 that he was putting i think 8" of lift at 40's on. check you this site, i think it might help some:
http://www.aot.state.vt.us/dmv/docum...tionManual.pdf

front bumper 28"
rear bumper 31"

ironically the toughest state for lift laws around new england is maine!! go figure. sheepjeep has had some problems because he lives near boston. it's all about the shop that you go to. in a rural area, they are not going to bust ballz for a modified jeep as long as it's got a cat. mud flaps maybe if it's really big, but if you're driving a huge jeep on the road you should have mud flaps anyways just as a courtesy to other drivers!

The only thing that sucks about Vermont is that you can not run aftermarket pipes on a sled!!! It's a rediculous law but I guess they made it because so many people come through VT on sleds from out of state and it annoys people who live near the trails. I've stayed at a friends house, and one of the main trails ran right through his front yard, across the driveway up the side of the property and then out back. it was annoying to have people even with stock exhaust rippin up the hills at 3am.

VTJeep - thanks for the link, i'll check it out later. i'm glad to know it sounds reasonable.

MJMA - maine definitally is tough. makes jersey seem easy. and I really could care less about sleds, at least for now. haven't found much interest in em.

i registered my XJ up in Vt this year just for this reason. with 5" of lift there is no way i can get a legal sticker here in Ma. i spoke with 3 different shops up in Vt about lift laws and there really doesnt seem to be much on the books that specifically relates to the issue. one common point they all shared was that if it looks like a real P.O.S. they wont touch it. if it looks like a solid vehicle and apears to be built properly they dont generally care.

I have next to no experience with vermont outside of the Manchester/Dorset area and Stratton Mountain. Those areas seem pretty nice and if I could find a job I'd like that.. the area I happened to find a job that was hiring in was a little further north (by like 3 hours) though and it's not like they are calling back or anything yet. But my wife likes the idea of Vermont and there are other jobs so it's certainly an option... particularly if it's easier to get inspected in then around here.

So nobody will inspect anything with big tires?

nope. everyone here has a set of inspection tires. trucks look funny about that time....

and the cops have caught on, it's now an arrestable offense to modify the vehicle after inspection. so... kinda makes me worried driving my rig around town.

the thing is, I know a crapload of people here already. (a bunch of my friends from HS ended up congregating here... why I don't know, but they did)

I could make a killing here opening a PA style hoagie shop, 'cause people here don't know how to make a fawkin sandwich that doesn't suck.

that or a good pizza joint
