I have big plans for my 93 still stock XJ. I always end up visisting the bone yard for 1 reason or another and am curious about where to look for a set of dana 44s. I was told abot the 87 Cherokee, but where else can I look? Or the 9" ford. Something that will not give me problems when I get up to 35s. And add rear discs eventually?

Try:
Pre 80's ford f150's 4x4's of course
In the 80's look for ford F-250/ F-350's
Grand Wagoneers from the 80's I think have 44's
You can get a D44 from the towing package XJ
A ford exploder 8.8 is also a good idea
Good luck.

Dana 44 were also used under '86-'92 Commanche pickups outfitted with the Metric Ton package. And you already know that '87 XJ's ran Dana 44.

XJ 44's are most common in '87s, but also found in 88s and 89s.

I found my D44 out of a '87 XJ 'Wagoneer' it had the wood sides and the whole bit.

If I were you, I'd look for an 8.8 out of an Exploder. Good axles they are. With discs even.

i might be selling my rear dana 44 out of my TJ. it has 4.56 gears, disc breaks, and Superior 33 spline axles, it's all in perfect condition, i've only had it in for about a year. the price would have to be good for me to sell, because i'll replace it with a dana 60, and putting that in will be quite a pain and expensive.

I'm right behind you when it comes to your name, CheapXJ. So wouldn't 60s run up quite a bill? And where would I find such 60s?

cool site, it says a price for 5 or more but I only need the 2. does anyone know what 2 will go for? I want to end up running like 33s, what gearing would be ideal??? Also I talked to a friend down at the bone yard, he says there is a 96 exploder that I can probably get both sets of axles for 3 to 350, but nobody has said anything about the front axle, if I can use it on the jeep, I wouldn't imagine it could?

TTB front axle. You don't want it. (It's Ford's version of an early IFS setup. Better than the CV shaft IFS in my opinion, but I'm biased b/c I've got an F150 with a TTB D44 and a Ford 9" rear. Yeah, I feel guilty when I think of swapping it all onto the Jeep. )

Talk about cheap I picked up 3-Dana 60's a D44 front and a 14 bolt for $50. That is what you call a CheapXJ buildup.
I might be selling a D60 also for around $150
