Didn't one of the early t-cases used have a Hi-N-Lo shift pattern and a "lock" button for 4WD? 207, 228, or 229?

I read an article one time (almost positive it was in either Fourwheeler or Petersens a few years back) that there is a logic to how they assign numbers to their t-cases. The first digit is for how many outputs the t-case has (or something like that), so 2 means two outputs. The second digit is the strenght rating, larger numbers mean stronger t-cases. This holds true with the 231, 241, 261, 271 line, but the 231 is stronger than the 242 so it sort of debunks it. The thrid digit is some sort of special feature. 1 is part time, 2 is full time, 3 is electric **** (IIRC), the WJ's qudratrac (is it a 9 or 7?) is for the gerodisc lockers). You also have to look at the NP 205 (one of the strongest t-cases ever), the 207, 228, 229, etc. These older cases obviously don't hold true to this scheme. It could just be the cases since the change to the NVG name, but the 231 is from before that time. Leaves a lot of questions, so I don't know how much truth there is to it. Maybe I'll fire an e-mail off to NVG about it one of these days. I know I did read it somewhere in print (like 99% sure it would have been Fourwheeler or Petersens, would have had to be a few years back too). Guess I have a reputation. Honestly I though this one would be a quick and easy reply. Guess not.

The 228/229 cases had the button for 4wd and then the selector for hi/low range.
the difference between the 228 and 229 is use of a viscous coupler vs. center differential for the case. The button does not lock the case though, the button only engages 4wd. 4-hi is a fulltime AWD type setup while 4-low is part time. I had this case in my 86, and It did work darn well, it had the VC and track lok in the rear. it would climb up anything. (those cases are also HUGE and BEEFY!! the same case was used in grand wagoneers behind a V8) they have a 1.5" wide chain if i remember correctly. They also have a factory fixed rear output yoke and slip driveshaft (no SYE needed) maybe I should just put that case in my 89. I kinda miss it, It shifted MUCH easier than my 242 did. Better go see if they made a cube out of my 86 yet

oh, and the 207 is basically the 231, except a little weaker.
