What exactly happens after I pull the lever from 2 Hi to 4 Hi?
I understand that the front wheels now recieve power from the engine but how is this done?

the lever engages the sprokets for the FWD.
The movement is transmited by a large steel chain that connects both the rear and the front shafts. When you pull the lever, the front shaft connects to the large chain and there ya go

If you didnt want it to, you could get disconnecting hubs, and the front axle + driveshaft would never turn untill you engaged 4hi, and the hubs.
But I dont think it wears as much as you think it would.
