Depends on what you want. Starter kits are usually 3" or 3.5" lift. Thost will easily clear 31 inch tires. Most like either rusy's or rubicon express

What type of wheeling are you planning on doing, rocks, mud, fire trails etc.?

Will this be a trail rig only, or will you be using it as your daily driver(DD)?

The more info about your intentions the better!

You'll have to tell us what you plan on doing with it. Are you planning on running trails, and doing a lot of offroading? Or is this just primarily a street rig that you want to bump up to put some bigger tires on it?

Regardless, you'll be able to get most of what you need from here.

i want a daily driver that will be a beast when i take it out on the "fire trails" by me. i live in jersey so my four wheelin is basically limited to the pines, and if anyone is familiar with the areas its sand and mud. im not tryning to spend 1,000 dollars on a rubicon express kit.. thats just too much.

If your going with 3.5" RE, its not that much unless you want rear leafs. Then its like 200 more, only looking at 7** including shiping.

buy lower control arms(LCAs) and front springs used. Then go and get some s10/dakota springs(search). Now you have a cheap lift that flexes well. Then you could make your own disconnects. And it will flex better. I used a 1" t-case drop that cost me ~$4 to buy. When you lift it throw your rear sway bar out.

Use the search button you don't have to spend bunches of money to have fun.

I know everyone's going to knock it, but I was pretty happy with my Superlift 3" kit when I had my Jeep. I paid something like $250 for it--new coils, add-a-leafs, and shocks. If you're looking to save the skrillaz, look around locally so you don't have to pay shipping. See sig pic.

yeah sounds like you want more than you can afford, if $700 start looking at "budget boosts" around $200 for two inches of lift, with a little trimming you could run 31's. It wont be everything youv always wanted on th trail, but hey you gota start somewhere.

Rusty's 3" full-pack kit is an excellent place to start. It's right in that price range you mentioned.

Trenton, eh? Whereabouts?

I live just off Sullivan Way, and go to school at TCNJ. Perhaps you've seen this thing driving around.

if you're talking about going to areas like wharton state forest, the best thing you can do is wheel it stock and see what it can and can't do. there's plenty of fun to be had there for just about any size rig, but if you start out stock, you'll have the opportunity to figure out what mods are going to benefit the type of wheeling you want to do. It will also improve your skills by forcing you to compensate for equipment with technique.

also, if you're even considering venturing into the mud there, you'd best start thinking about recovery equipment. Before you buy any lift kits, tires, etc. get yourself a hi-lift jack and a fair amount of chains and straps.

i go out there all the time, and we're always willing to take another vehicle along, so pm me if you're interested in going out there with another rig or two.

Yeah, what he said. Listen to that guy.

If you don't have any recovery points yet, that would probably not be a bad place to start. A hitch in the rear is a good thing to have (preferably class III) and a set of tow hooks with appropriate brackets up front as well. Straps aren't gonna really work too well if you don't have anywhere to attach them.

so vette, does my wheeling meet your standars, or do we need to do the trail run at full speed next time?

there is no body lift for an xj. it has unibody construction, where the frame is actually part of the body. body lifts on wranglers and pickups are used as a cheap way to clear bigger tires, or sometimes to clear new drivetrain parts.
