OK, here we go again.
My 4.0 started making tapping/clicking noises on startup a couple of months ago (approx 38k), I don't know if you remember but I posted a topic cause I thought it was piston slap. Thru some very kind and generous feedback from you lovely folk we put it down to lifter noise due to dry start . Went down to my local pepboys and got myself some mobil 1 synthetic and K&N 2001 oil filter with superb backflow valve technology. The startup noise dissapeared only to come back 1 month (800 miles) later . Took it to the dealership who informed me that what I have is lifter noise and that it is kinda normal, to leave it alone and live with it. The nice man said that the lifters are hydrolic so even though you hear some noise it is only due to dirt and stuff and as long as the noise goes away after a little while you have nothing to worry about. I like adding stuff to my jeep but am not very well versed on taking things apart or off my rig. IS THE NICE MAN AT THE DEALERSHIP TELLING ME THE TRUTH???? OR IS HE ONE OF THOSE

You guys rock

What he said is pretty much true. I'm not so sure about the dirt part though. The lifter noise is not a bad thing, it should go away after the oil heats up and then pressurizes the hydraulic lifters, they work using oil(hydraulic) pressure. If you run synthetic it is more likely to drip down out of the top end while sitting. I wouldn't worry about it

You should hear the lifters in my 96 hyundai accent (dd). after hearing them any jeep lifter noise is very nominal. Mine does it too and has 232000 kms on it. Still working fine!
