I'm not sure if they are or not? but i know you can't get anything over 4.56 for a D44A...so i'd guess they are different but that's a complete guess. I know the lockers are different.

The ring and pisnions aren't the same, but it's the same ring an pinion that Vipers and Vettes use, which is the only reason there's anything at all.

Also, I don't think the WJ versions are C clipped, just the ZJ versions.

Diesel, can you verify that the axle you are trying to find gears for has an aluminum center section?

Where did you procure this animal? Is it out of a ZJ or a WJ?

Well, the only reason that I ask is that I'm looking for one out of a ZJ. I'm gonna cut it up (because they are practically worthless) and use it to build a better axle.

The easiest way to spot the WJ axle is that it has the 5x5 wheel stud pattern, and no track bar or upper control arms mounts, just a mount on the top of the center section.

He's going from 3.73s to 4.10s?

WHY? Not really worth the effort for such a small change.....

Wait, wait, wait....he's swapping THIS axle into something else?

This swap makes NO sense.

1. He has to cut off all of the coil spring related bracketry and weld on leaf spring perches.

2. There are no aftermarket parts available for this axle. No lockers exist. None of the standard D44 parts interchange. As you have noticed, gearsets are the only thing available (and only in a handful of ratios), and not everyone has those.

This guy needs an 8.8....he could get it with 4.10s, relocate the perches, and call it done. That would be much cheaper and less time consuming, even if he got this axle for free.

you people are nuts, must be the cold weather

No way in hell i'd ever consider swapping in a D44A... Yes they are stronger than a D35, but they all seem to have gear whine at some point(s) in their life. Numerous people have punctured the housings...it's just Aluminum. There's a reason they say not to jack up the rear of the vehicle by the differential in grands...

As razor said, get an 8.8. w/ 4.10's. Worth the time and trouble in the long run. Especially once you buy 4.10's for it since they are hard to find i bet they are expensive, just a guess there though. my 8.8 gears were 215, figure 60 for an install kit, you're lookin at close to 300 in gears, you can get an 8.8 with gears in it for not much more.

All that said, you could also do what Razor's doin and mate it with a 12bolt. He can fill you in on that, or you can search, it was brought up a while ago.

Well, mating it with a 12 bolt is a good didea for a ZJ, but not for a YJ. For a YJ, I'd go 8.8 hands down.

I debated going 8.8 or the 44A/12 bolt hybrid for a while. Either choice would suit me, and the hybrid will be easier to fab up, and I won't have to worry about the axle being narrower, which is a concern for me since I'm still running a stock wheel with my 33s. That made the hybrid the best choice for my application.

For a YJ, I'd definitely go with the 8.8...

Diesel, if he wants to get rid of this axle, I'm looking for one, so if he (wisely) decides to go with an 8.8, lemme know.

That's just it....they aren't worth anything. Everyone swaps them out for something else since you can't get lockers or anything (and the precise reason why I'm dumping mine).

I liked to a guy on pirate that wanted $1000 for one.

Yeah...I think he's probably still got it.

Like I said, I'm looking for one, but of course, you're in RI, and I'm in Arkansas, so it'll have to be shipped, which will be a substantial portion of the cost.

If you're interested in haggling a little, shoot me a PM.

forward air would probably be a little over 100, though unloaded with no gears or anything it would be cheaper. If you can get to a stop.

I remember everyone talking about that after that article in a 4x4 rag, but looking at the tubes on the zj axle I think I rather have d35 tubes
