Where's the best recovery point on a stock XJ with no towing package. Like, if I was pulling someone out?

The best thing I can think of is the front bumper brackets. But it is going to screw up your front bumper a bit.

Unless you have to pull someone out Right now, I suggest you get some recovery points.

Do a search, i'm sure theres a post somewhere around here about once or twice a month.

C4x4 XJ Tow hook brackets for the Front end

Also, for like 120$ you can get a class 3 reciever hitch for the rear.

If you have to do it right now, and they arent seriously stuck in anything, you can tie a rope onto the front swaybar. My XJ didnt come with any towpoints (stupid jeep, even civics have a place to attach a strap onto) and I needed to pull a friend out of a snowbank. We tied a rope onto the swaybar and went slow, its still fine.

For my Jeep, I used my front axle to get pulled out, and I've used the rear shackle on the drivers side to tow/get pulled out. I do NOT recomend using it though, buy the proper equipment. I'm planning on doing that soon.

please dont tie to the sway bar. if you are gona need to get someone out you and use the shackle in the rear or tie the axle right next to the leaf spring.
in the front you wanna get right next to the lower control arm mount as possible.

thats how the tow trucks do it for recoverying so it'll work in reverse also. those are the strongest factory points of attachtment on an XJ.

See I thought about that, but I figured a slightly out of shape swaybar is nicer than a bent axle housing.

depends how ya pull on the axle. if you hook up near the leaf springs then you arnt stressing the axle to terribly much. its a lever basicly that resisting the force if you can picture it in your head. if not MSpaint is armed and ready.

I think you should use your bumper if you dont have anything else. You can bend up your bumper and not cause any harm.

uhh the bumper mounts become the issue.... never mind the fact that its just .080 sheet metal, granted bent up a little bit.. but i wouldnt use a stock bumper for anything in recovery. axles or shackle mounts.. thats it.

I pulled a Ford Taurus out of a little ditch, got ran off the road, and I got my tow strap out, crawled under the rear end of that car and there they where, tow points....... Hooked right up, pulled right out...done.

If you get a Jeep that does not have factory tow or is not a limited or "special edition" you get no whatso ever tow points, front or rear.

Jeep their enginerds. Make the best off road machine out of the box and don't put tow points on every model!!!!

the ford taurus does have "tow" point it has tie down points for transport. the jeep has holes in it for something called a tow cluster. got a little hook, a T looking dealier and some other stuff.

I have towed and any vehicle without a factory tiedown point has holes in the frame for a T-Hook.

I have towed people out of mud using my crossmember. Only other place I would use is the axle. Very solid point.
