I got a np231 with a 23 spline input, but I need it to match a 21 spline tranny output shaft. I'm about to order a 21 spline input gear from novak adapters. I've been doing some research, and it seems not all 21 spline input gears are the same. First of all, some come with different shaft lengths, bearing shoulders, and gear cuts, as shown on this link: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/231_input_gears.htm
Once I figure out what kind I need for my 231 (out of an 88 XJ) I'm gonna order the input gear. Around the input gear there are 4 15mm bolts. I took those bolts off, and it didn't seem to do anything. To get to the input gear do you gotta completely dissasemble everything on the t-case. Also, what style of 21 spline input would match my t-case? Thanks.

i think you will need to compleatly tear apart the case to acomplish the swap, and as for the input, i have what you need in a spare case, but it make take a bit to get it out and who knows about shipping.....if you dont' need it right now, i may be able to hood you up

If it's came from an 88 5-speed, there's a slim chance that it's 23 spline, but 88+auto=21 spline short w/ wide bearing. and yes, you have to tear the entire case apart to swap the gears. can you get pictures of the input gear (profile and looking directly at the splines) as well as a closeup of the tag on the back case half? something definitely isn't right here. something is wrong here...

Did you end up finding an AX5 set up for 4wd already? Or did you rebuild yours?

a guy gave me two of his 4wd ax-5's for free. One is in pieces, and the other whole one has bad synchros. Since ax-5s are basicly in two halves, I'm gonna swap a 4wd rear halve in place of my 2wd rear halve. Right now the 2wd rear halve is just a tailhosuing. I'm also gonna need to swap tranny output shafts.
Side profile of an ax-5, the piece on the far left is what I need to put on the back of mine: The whole tranny with busted synchros: What are circled in red are what I need to swap: The things circles in red are what I need to swap Ryan, heres the pics you wanted:

Nice. Looks like you're well on your way then.
I woulda done that on my AX-15, except I couldn't find any donor ones. Not a single one. I knew I had to find that piece to replace the tail housing, but it just wasn't worth it. When I was looking for output shafts and input gears (what I woulda done for a 23-spline t-case ), I was informed by a dude at a tranny shop that the AX-series transmissions are relatively easy to rebuild, and that they go back together pretty easy. I never got to the point of taking mine apart, but as long as you keep track of all the spacers, bushings, and crap and what order they go on the shafts, it shouldn't be too bad.Best of luck to ya!

before I start wrenching on my 2wd ax-5, I'm gonna practice on the 2 other ax-5s sitting in my garage. I really hope the output shaft on my 2wd ax-5 is 21 spline or else I'm fawked!! Anyways, I'm prepared to have my XJ out of commison for a while. I got my mom's buick century as a backup
