i have had a long history (5 years) with sports cars, but am thinking about getting into jeeps. i am no stranger to the jeep mind you...my parents have driven them for the last 10 years or so. so when i decided that i wanted some reliable transportation that i can still have some fun with while i am stationed away from home, i decided on a jeep wrangler. my max budget is 10k but if i can spend less i would be thrilled being i will be having to make payments. is there any advice as far as what to look for, what to avoid etc. i was told to look at the newer TJ models instead of the YJ. is there any substance to that recommendation or is one just as good as the other. what are the differences between the two other than the headlights. different engine power ratings, gear ratios, mechanicals, etc? thank you for any help that you can provide.

First of all, I would say this to anyone looking to buy a vehicle. DO NOT MAKE PAYMENTS
sorry to emphasize that. But I believe you can get an older TJ with a 4.0 EFI engine for less than 10k, maybe even 7k. The 4.0 has gobs of low end torque, and about 200 HP at ~4500 RPM. Could be wrong, but not about the torque.

Most folks are going to have to make payments. Sure there are a select few that have the luxury of large cash reserves, but that isn't typical of most Americans today.

You spend much less in the long run if you can make it without payments.
My plan in life is to never make payments, on anything. Of course I have that luxury, ime young, and ime not married with children, and I have a running vehicle that I own. Ime not putting anyone down for having to make payments, ime just saying if you can afford to sacrifice a little bit just to avoid payments, its better.

okay agreed that payments arent the best option, but until Uncle Sam decides to pay his employees a bit better its my only choice. any info on the technical differences between the two models. obviously i would like to get a newer one, but if there is really no difference between the two mechanically then i might get the older XJ just to save some money. oh yeah..i am wanting one with a manual tranny just in case there is anything i need to look out for as far as thats concerned in addition to what i mentioned before. thanks again.

I agree, Most people don't have 10k laying arround, Payments are a good thing if you need a car now.
We could go on and on about What is better Xj or TJ/YJ is all up to you, lots of people on this board have Xj's and some have Tj's and some have both I tottaly forgot my point, but when i remember it there will be an edit

It seems to me from the post you put up there, that you mean YJ not XJ. The XJ is the cherokee, real cheap and easy to fawk with. The YJ and TJ wranglers are more capable stock though. Go TJ if you want to coolness and not much to do. Or XJ if you want something to play with. YJ if youre really poor.

I say get a 91 YJ.
The biggest J/TJ difference is suspension. Everyone else was to busy with car payment info to bother answering your question. YJ's have leaf spings at both ends. TJ's have coils springs at both ends. Personally I prefer leafs to coils. 87-90 YJ's have the 258 with the ultra finiky stock carburator. 91-95 have the 242 with fuel injection.

If you could pick between a yj and tj, get the tj. If you put a 4" lift on both of these, the tj would be able to flex more. If you wanted to run alot of lift the yj is the better choice and do alot of research into spring over.

I would say get a TJ over a YJ. I like the look quite a bit better, and they're more refined and comfortable. Nicer dash and interior, better ride and handling, better stock flex, and obviously something newer is less likely to have problems with anything from the engine to body rust. If I ever bought a Wrangler it would definitely be a TJ. But I guess your best bet would be to drive a few of both and find out as much about both as you can, then make your choice
