Last weekend's wheelin trip, my speedo cut out halfway through the day. Driving home that night I got that stupid red 'check engine light' which threw a code for a missing/malfunctioning speedo sensor. Not surprising since it still wasn't working.

So yesterday I pull it apart, look at it, go hmmm...then put it back together again, same notches and everything. Worked fine for the day. For some reason now, it still indicates speed, but will jump higher at times. This obviously isn't a mechanical failure because this would mean the speedo gear was spinning faster than the output shaft = not possible.

So does anyone know what the pin configuration would be? My guess right now is that it works off a sort of frequency counter (a binary signal sent to the computer, which counts it and turns it into a speed reading) and something is grounding out and causing it to get a bad signal.

Anyone else have an idea? The junkyard by me currently has no XJ's with an electric speedo, so I'm beat as far as just pulling a new sensor.

Get a surplus oxygen tank off Ebay for like 15 bux. They're real cheap because they're older than the rated lifespan so they won't certify the pressure rating anymore - but they're also rated for like 1500 psi. You can put 120 psi in them with no problem at all.

No help on the speedo sensor? Anyone?
