Sounds like your boiling the fuel in the rail causing the misfire. With the exhaust being right under the intake it throws a lot of heat at the intake and fuel rail when the truck gets shut off and there is no air flow. My 01 does it from time to time, I either keep it running or leave it off for longer periods of time to let it cool off before restarting.

What year? Is it distributor or coil pack ignition? I've also had ^ this ^ problem before, but only when the engine gets into the 220 degree and up range and I shut it down. My XJ has a bad cyl. head, so she overheats pretty bad.

Heat soak is a common problem on the 4.0 from the early years(87) and up. I own 4 XJ's and one MJ. Two of the 5 have the heat soak issue. Easy to diagnose, hard as hell to stop it. I have tried insulation, heat wraps and spark plug insulation. The only thing that fixes it is colder weather.

Ok, but why would eliminating the misfire codes fix the problem till the next time it happens, maybe in the computer? doesn't make sence if it was heat soak or boiling fuel in the rail how would clearing the misfire codes cure that?I wonder if the computor needs to be replaced or re-flashed....

The ECM on a XJ is easy enough to replace, Pick one up at the JY and try it
