Default Project Volv8

I've been hinting at this for a while now. Finally making progress, figured I would start a thread.

1994 Volvo 940
05 LQ9/4l65

Timmay banged out the motor mounts and trans mount Sunday. Got it back to my house Sunday night. The stock truck pan is going to need a lot of cutting to work. I marked it out and dropped it off to Tim tonight.

Trans mount. It still uses the factory rubber mount underneath of it.

Empty engine bay. Pulled the motor out tonight to measure for pan clearance.

Motor mounts. Still uses the factory mount. I have been looking for 940 poly mounts but no luck. Thinking of making hockey puck mounts.

Look at those welds! Would you expect any less from Timmay???

1/4 inch spacers used to drop the sub frame or more clearence

updates to come

Badass. I was thinking about the same thing just the other day. Driving the miata has me thinking about racecars a lot and different cool projects. All said & done, how much will she weigh?

That thing is going to be awesome. Just be sure to run tires that lose traction before parts break.

no turning back now! hope to have the pan welded up tomorow.

messing with the idea of hockey puck motor mounts. got 2 pucks in there now which is a bit shorter than the stock rubbers with the weight on them. i think 2.5 pucks will be the ticket.

The Vortec HO 6000 or VortecMAX is a special high-output version of the Vortec 6000 V8 truck engine originally designed for Cadillac. This engine was introduced in other truck lines as VortecMAX for 2006. It features high-compression (10:1) flat-top pistons for an extra 10*hp (7*kW) and 10*lb·ft (14*N·m), bringing output to 345*hp (257*kW) and 380*lb·ft (515*N·m). LQ9s are built only in Romulus, Michigan. GM also listed it as based on LS architecture.[24]

The axles will probably be fine if he keeps the stock size tires on and avoids wheel hop when the tires are spinning every time he hits the gas past 1/5 throttle

haha, its actualy got a dana 30 rear. atleast my wheels wont fall off when the shafts break. got my shorty headers today. got the tac module and pedal assembly yesterday. things are coming together!

tim got the pan finished up for me today.

forgot to mention the trans also has a transgo hd 2 kit installed, kevlar band, vette 2nd gear servo, the "beast" sunshell and upgraded 4th gear servo. clutches and seals were replaced when it was open. engine and motor came out of a silverado ss so it was awd so it needed to be converted to rwd.

it should shift pretty hard.

tim got me a price on a 3000 stall converter today . . . one thing leads to another

got the motor and pan bolted up today. tried to drop the motor and trans in as one unit but you cant do it that way, the pan wont clear the cross member. and if you try to unbolt the pan and leave the trans bolted up, then you cant install the pan because the trans and the cross member get in the way.

got the shortys bolted up but they are going to need some modication at the collector end.

driver side

pass side

how are you supposed to get a plug wire on that without it burning through?

the hood almost closes. it hits at the throttle plate motor. ill have to add some washers to the hinges.

i only have 4.5 inches of ground clearance at the oil pan, going to need to get a skid plate for that.

wires with ceramic boots. accel sells them for about $125. I just put a set on my 454, but I haven't had a chance to run it and see if they were worth it. I had the accel 9000 wires with the aluminized rubber boots, and also had heat shield blankets around them, and they still disintegrated. hopefully the ceramics work out. you might also consider applying header wrap to hold back some more heat.

fukkkk. pan didnt fit with with the pickup in place. needed more clearance where the pickup bends down to go to the deep part of the pan. tried to smack it out with a hammer, cracked the pan on both sides, one crack right in the middle of a bolt hole. pan is not salvageable, i gotta get another pan and have tim cut and weld it for me.

small set back

Can you go with a pan that has more clearance?

tried vette batwing and tim had an f body pan at the shop, neither are any better. was thinking of cutting an f body pan but then it probably hold less than 5 quarts then i gotta get an f body pickup too. truck is 8.25 inches deep and f body is about 5. if you look at the f body pan the slope is much more gruadual the the trucks - i would have to take off alot more than i did for the truck pan to make it fit, but yea it would have alot more ground clearance on the sump end. i need it to be as tight as possible all the way untill it drops off for the sump part of the pan.
http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...-oil-pans.html

the truck pan that tim cut up was 1.75 inches until it dropped off for the sump part of the pan. i could get my fingers in between the cross member and the pan with it in the car.

i may have to add another puck to the motor mount, we'll see. im going to have to get a skid plate fabbed for the oil pan. if i have to cut the hood to make it work i will. i dont fell like switching it to car intake and accessories.

Well my WJ has a D44 so there

My rebuttal is that my Z28 has a big *** torque bar to help prevent wheel hop, which is the biggest axle killer. As long as I don't let the wheels hop and don't put huge meats on it should be fine.

The Volvo on the other hand...

As long as he doesn't get too much traction I think he'll be ok. At least for awhile.

not many updates latley. chopped and flipped the tac pedal, in its stock form it was way to long and was hitting into the trans tunnel. got it tacked together right now, gotta weld it tomorrow. gonna use the stock bolt hole in the fire wall for the top mounting hole, nut and bolt the bottom one through the firewall, gonna have to pull some of the carpet up.

ordered a hobart 140 from northern tool, should be here tomorow. im gonna need to do some of my own welding (exhaust, pedal, skid plate, linkage etc.), ive been wanting my own welder for a while finally had a good reason to buy one.

The 940 also has a big *** torque bar which runs to a rear cross member

engine, oil pan, and trans are sitting in together for the first time! didn't get any pics of the new pan, but we didn't cut it up as much. mainly just the underside of it. the pick up fit, but i had to chop the cross member a little to fit the pan. i am planning to add some bracing to the cross member to make up for the parts i cut out.

cross memeber pic after cutting. a little hard to see where i cut it.

i also had a harbor freight cut off wheel explode in my face today. luckily i had my glasses on. my friend who was standing about ten feet way got hit on his lip with a piece of the wheel. never going to use those wheels again.

ive been slacking on my picture taking lately.
