This summer Im planning on selling my XJ and my saab and getting a 4cyl Tacoma 4x4.

I know the 22re is the best and lasts the longest, but then they also made a (I think 2.4 Liter) and I know they make a 2.7 L.

I would only want a 4 cylinder for fuel mileage reasons.

So someone school me on the 4 Cylinder Yota truck engines.

TIA

edit: I like the 1998 body style and newer, pretty much what it comes down to is that I wanna have the ability to carry around my mtn bikes/dirtbike and throw my ski stuff in the back, get decent fuel mileage, and be able to wheel or get to partys in fields(which is very common in my town)

Which motor should I choose and which one should I stay away from. (2.2, 2.4, or 2.7)

from someone who drives 4cyl yota trucks every day at work let me say you wont do much better than teh xj on mileage, and they are reliable up to bout 120k than everything goes wrong on them.

And the epa rating on them isnt much better than a 8cyl grand...

Really, hmm, I mean I drive a saab, so really what Im looking for is a truck that isnt 2wd and I can haul around my dirtbike.

From everyone that I know that has one, they love the trucks. :dunno:

What year are the trucks you are driving, and are they auto or manual?

we have had everything from 84-98's, auto and manual, the 98 is a manual.

the 98 we have is a sr5 with the 2.7l motor which has tons of power for a 4cyl truck motor, although 5th gear is always useless even at 80mph...

epa rating on that truck is 19/21, we are getting about 16/19 with the truck. it does have normally 100lbs of tools on it but thats not **** for a truck...

The rear bed side is falling off after putting too much weight (rated for 600lbs) rack 1 time. Rear springs are very sagged as well, and shocks (upgraded to heaviest available) still allow alot of sway on wide highway turns.

Honestly if i had to get a smaller truck i'd get a dakota after seeing how well they hold up to fleet/construction use. We had an 87 that had 300k on it's 3.8ltr carbed motor before it caught on fire from a faulty carb install....

Also we've had 15, 80lb bags of crete loaded on the daks more than once (we have 2 used daily and one thats the boss's personal truck that gets used as a back up) And the mileage would not be much worse than what you currently get, daily use my uncle has a quad cab with a 4.7 auto gets bout 16/18, bout the same as my wj...

also after examining them at the junkyard, and talking to my buddy who is on his 3rd toy truck the 22re throws timing chains randomly at about 120ish, they have plastic tensioning tabs that just go at that mileage so if it has that many miles or close to it i'd replace it when you start hearing a slapping noise. both 22re in the pickups at work have had that done as well it makes a hell of a racket and eats through the timing cover

(xxxx - 1994)
22R: 2.4L carbureted - reliable as a mofo
22RE: 2.4L EFI, 109hp iirc, 140ish torque, reliable as a mofo
3RZ-FE: 2.7L EFI reliable as a mofo (1995 and newer, introduced with the Tacoma in 95) tons of power, 150hp/180tq, same numbers as
3VZE: 3.0L EFI V6, reliable as a mofo, put in "pickups" and T100's  up til 1994

Yeah, I have a buddy who has the 99 Taco, short bed, regular cab, 2.7liter, 5 speed 4x4, on 31 BFG M-alls. He gets around 27MPG in the summer and like 21 in the winter.

And hes got a bed mounted tool box in the back.

You'll be better off with the 6 cylinders, they'll get better mileage than the 4 bangers if you put bigger tires on it. If you keep it stock, they 4 banger MAY get better mileage...but not by much.

What he said.

I have personally had two different 22R motors with over 200k and still running good.

most the toyotas i have delt with are the most trust worthy trucks you can get. 3 times around the clock for our old girl
(in NZ anyway)
