Im going to be selling the XJ soon and hopefully if the budget allows it to get a cheap tow rig that would only be used in the summer for going on wheelin trips.
I was thinking an older CTD
Anything in the under $4000 price range.
Suggestions...

you will not find a decent, not 300k mile old CTD for 4k...or at least not that i have ever seen. my truck was 6750, and it has what is considered to be one of the most under-powered diesels on the market (chevy 6.5 TD)
CTD be the way to go but good luck finding one for that price. Save a few more bux and you can get them in the 7000 price range. I just picked mine up for 7500

I found this one...:
1995 DODGE RAM 2500 4X4 CUMMINS DIESEL
ABS, pb, ps, 4X4, 5 spd std, 6 cyl, CD, diesel, 5 spd, 3:73 gears, runs & drives excellent, new tires, trailer package, 8' bed, 20 MPG, dark metallic green, $6500. (860) 355-9613 or (203) 470-0721 cell (4X). Sherman, CT
nice thing about is its in my hometown, and I could send my dad to go look at it since im at school in Gaymont

probably has 300k miles on it. CTD 5 speed is the definition of a work truck.

Maybe it was some old dude who used it to commute to work and occasionally pull a trailer?

No, it's been pulling 10k lbs every day of its life. James knows all.

could be, but that is rare. when you work with cars for 3 years...you tend to be able to pick out the work truck/not work truck...yes, i know they are all not work truck when they are a standard cab long box 5 speed diesel being sold for cheap, but they usually are.

depending on the size of camper...that might not be a good thing either. mine is one of those, and so far i am not all that impressed with it....uses more oil than wanted.

dude its true gm has a spec where they wont service a motor under warranty till it consumes something like 2 qts a week, cuz otherwise its considered normal

dude, what are you talking about. 2 qts. a week doesnt make sense. what if someone drives like 5 miles/week, or 5000 miles/week?

lol i aint arguing with you anymore its in the gm service manual as just that 2 quarts per week as a time frame, not any sort of mileage interval.
I maybe a quart a week but it was an alarmingly high number, gm expects their motors to consume oil, hell the saturn had 30k on it and it drank oil but never had blue smoke at all, nor any leaks, same with dads 4.3 when he had it, sis's saturn, uncles 350. GM expects it, its just one of them funny facts. Kinda like how they dont really set 14bolts much at the factory rather than just drop them together and let em roll

i have never read about burning oil being normal...in any of the service manuals i had for my 2 gm vehicles...

It is qts per mile. I believe on the big V8's (6.0 and 8.1) it was 1 qt per 3000 miles. Even then they still might replace it.
We used to have to do oil consumption tests at the dealer I worked at. You mark the fill cap, oil filter and drain with paint so you can tell if it has been tampered with. Stupid people would drain some and come back acting like they hadn't messed with it. We would have them standing there when we popped the hood and immediately point out it had been tampered with. They would play dumb and act like their wife had done it. This was pretty common right before warranty was about to go out. No complaints before then. Alot of people just want a new motor and to have their warranty extended for free.
Some dealers will lie and say it is something else, but this is when you need to call GM directly and catch the dealer in a lie.
