A buddy of mine is looking to convert his 2wd truck to a 4x4. Selling is not an option. Do they sell a conversion kit, full drive train, axles, transfer case, or do you need to buy those all seperately?

he needs a 4wd tranny, t-case and the 4x4 front axle assembly along with the 4x4 shifter whether it's button or lever....find a scrap yard with what he needs....that's your best bet

find a whole truck with what he needs. THAT is your best bet.

I had a friend ask me to do this to his dodge, and I told him no because it can be such a nightmare...

Dude it ain't as easy as converting a 2wd solid axle Jeep. Second gen Rams have completely different frames for 2wd and 4wd. 4wd's use solid axles up front, while 2wd are IFS. That means he'll need to torch off a ton of bracketry and crap, then fab up all kinds of mounts for the suspension and stuff. I imagine he'll need to run a decent amount of lift in order to clear the existing framerails. If he wants to re-use his existing transmission he'll need to find a divorced t-case to run, otherwise he'll need to get a trans built to mate up to a t-case. I could go on for another page about all the BS he's gonna need to deal with and fab up. If he's willing to do that, then so be it, but if he's looking for a simple conversion this isn't it. It's gonna be a ton of money and work. I'd highly recommend just finding an older 4x4 with high miles and swap whatever good drivetrain and body parts he has onto it.

Yep youre right,

but the guy never said if it was a 1500 or not, (im also guessing it is) but if it was a 3500 c&c it would have a tube type front axle just like the 4wd and identical suspensoin to the 4wd.
Not busting yer balls, just adding my $.02. as Ive already been down this road.

If it's a 1998 Dodge with a 5.9L. I'm guessing it's a Dakota.

To be honest... It's just a hunch. Maybe it's cause I like the body style, size, blah blah blah... and I'm just hoping it's a Dakota. :roflmao:
