You are correct. Who wants a diesel w/ an auto, anyways.

Stop calling it a Cummings or I'll come through this computer screen and stab you in the head. There is no 'g' in Cummins. There never has been, and there never will be.
Sorry, but that's a pet peeve of mine. I just don't get why so many people have such a hard time getting it right.
The autos from 94 up are 47RH, 47RE and I think the newer ones are running 48RE. for the manuals I believe the early CTDs had nv4500s and the newer ones are running NV5600s. I have the 47RH auto. Its not bad. It is getting a little old with 188,000 miles on its clock so I will be replacing it sometime in the near future but when you replace a auto in a CTD or any diesel you can build them to handle just about any power output you desire. My new one will be built to handle 600HP and 1000 lb ft of torq. Manuals are better for towing but very hard to find a used one.

I have the auto in my 99. No complaints here. However...it probably wouldn't hold up with more power under the hood

Because everyone with the manuals loves them and never has any problems. (excluding old getrags, steer clear of them)
Lets be honest, with the amount of power you can modify a cummins to put out you can destroy any tranny behind it, its just a matter of whether you want to start out with a beefy manual that will last behind a stock, to fairly highly modified engine with no problems, or you can go with an auto that will be on the upper limits of its survivability with a stock motor, and down right doomed if you make any real mods to the motor.

Got the 48RE in our '06 CTD. Definitely didn't want a manual, just personal preference on driving. So far so good with the auto, but we've barely got over 12k on the truck now I think. Guess we'll see how it lasts long term. I don't see us dumping tons of money into performance mods, that's just less $$$ for the Jeeps. Do plan on a downloader at some point in the future though, mainly for a little more power and hopefully better mileage. It IS a diesel after all, and you just can't leave those stock. ;) If the stock auto goes out, we'll just give the boys at ATS Diesel a call for a truly bulletproof trans.

I've driven a manual since I started driving at the age of sixteen. Here's my very limited experience with auto vs. manual:
I had a '98 Dodge Ram 12valve Cummins with a 47RE trans. I hated it. The thing I like about a manual is that you have a clutch that will [pretty much] guarantee a known drive ratio. The auto has a Shotty asss Torque Converter that will fail over time and give you a variable engine RPM per mile. NOT A FAN.
They're about 2k right?
Keep going. For a really well built one (billet shafts, TC, Valvue body, etc.) it will be in the neighborhood of 3-5k. When mine goes if I keep it an auto I will be getting a new one from Goerends Transmissions http://www.gbtransmissions.com/ They flat know their stuff and stand behind it. I called up the owner Dave and talked to him about mine. Knowing I wasn't buying anything at the time he helped me over the phone check sensors and fix my tranny. His trannys are in alot of the heavy duty sled pullers and drag racers.
