It's a Powerpoint file. I'm kinda anxious to see this thing. Should be pretty cool...factory twin turbo's, common rail & totally new injector design!!....and hopefully none of the 6.0L's bugs.

Glad to see they quieted it down some. That was one of the reason I stayed away from them. I am interested to see how the particulate filter works out on the new diesels.

Yeah, the forced regeneration of the DPF will be something completely new to deal with. I'm kind of interested to see how well the "non-tech-savvy-type" folks handle it.

Brand New PSD's are Noisy fawkers. However, once broken in, they become much quiter. You can tell the difference between a rig with 3 miles from one with 1000+

I do agree that diesels do quiet down as they break in, but I have ridden in some Ford's with 100k+ miles and they were still really loud.

was it the 7.3? IF so...they are the noisy ones. the 6.0L i always thought was really quiet comared to my 6.5TD, or even to the Cummins in the pre-2003 trucks.

I have ridden in both the 7.3 and 6.0. Compared to the 6.5 is a diff story. I was just talking about all the trucks out currently.

WTF are you guys complaining about the noise of the diesels. Being loud is half the reason i bought my 7.3L PSD :D

i was talking with one of my drivers and the fleet manager today, the reason the 6.0 sucked so much was because it wasn't designed for a pickup. it was designed for comercial use. the stop and go everyday traffic is hard on it. the 2006/07 model year were the only truely decent 6.0's. also, ford owns cummins i guess. the reason they didn't use 'em was because they were too heavy for the trucks. didn't want all the weight. our 650's+use the cummins.

i know we've been over this. and it's not the whole cummins thing. I'll find out tomorrow what the guy was talking about. I dont really care. I'd take a ford over a dodge any day of the week. but that's just me.

edit: From what i've heard around the lot, was that frod owns 14% of cummins. another guy said all. however they still have a contract with dodge and the fords don't use the cummins due to the wieght issue. Not saying its true.

I'd take a Jeep over a Ford or a Dodge any day of the week. Unfortunately Jeep doesn't offer a diesel 1-ton truck, so I had to go with the next best thing. ;) Gotta love driving a truck that's essentially a 1-ton version of my XJ's suspension.

First off, this isn't another Ford vs. Dodge thread. Ford does not own any part of Cummins. (http://jeepin.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29930) Even if they did, the weight thing is a poor excuse. What's a Ford 1-ton anyways, a half ton with a bigger motor? :squint: I bet the 6.0L is comparable to the 5.9L in weight.

i read the thread. I was simply relaying what one of the fleet guys said, along with the previous inventory manager.

Maybe Shane can confirm this, but I heard Ford used that powerpoint presentation in front of a large group of people. When it was all done, they raised the screen and there was a new powerstroke running the hole time, nobody heard it because it was so quiet....

I hope its at least as quiet as the Chev LBZ motor....

I haven't heard that. However, i haven't been spending too much time on my FMCDealer forum with all the new 07's coming in. Had 20 or so cars/trucks this week arrive so far. But, from what i've been told, the new SD's will be at least as quiet as the Duramax. I have at least 2 orders in for 08 Super Duty's. And i haven't checked my orders in about 2 weeks so there's probably more. Couple Lariat F-250's. Makes me want to use my employee price and go into a bit of debt.

Im pretty sure that Ford bought out Cummins diesel a while back. And indeed own them now.

No. From Cummins' FAQ:

Does Ford own Cummins?
No, Ford does not own any part of Cummins Inc.

Dodge will have Cummins motors for at least the next 5 years probably. Ford will have Powerstrokes in their F250/350/450 for quite as while as well.

I was afraid that Benz would put the squish on Cummins, and insist on a Mercedes unit being used in Dodge trucks. The Cummins was the main reason I bought the truck!

That's the main reason a lot of folks buy the Dodge truck, and Dodge knows it. Powerstroke vs Cummins vs Duramax has just as much if not more to do with the buying decision than Ford vs Dodge vs GM/Chevy.

DCX will use Mercedes for their light-duty diesels, like the diesels in the Jeep line, if they put a diesel in the baby Freightliners/Sprinters, and possibly some of the smaller Dodge cars or minivans if those vehicles ever see a diesel motor, and of course any diesel Mercedes cars we see in the US. But for their truck line, it's the Cummins badge that really sells them.

Brand recognition and loyalty is one of the reasons Toyota is looking at Cat and John Deere (so I've read) for the diesel for their upcoming HD Tundra. Toy has a commercial truck line, HINO (or whatever the name is), that they could source a diesel motor from, but they know that their new truck's success depends as much on what badge is under the hood as it does the rest of the truck.

I can see that...

We all know a Toyota diesel would run for 88,000,000,000,000 miles though  and you can't make any maint. money offa that...

Psh, 22re's are sweet. I have friends that have at least 230k miles on them and they're still running strong. They do so because they put out about 80 hp and 110 tq.

I love the powerstroke. It's actually a really good motor. The way i feel (take it with a grain of salt considering what i do for a living) is that the first year 6.0's where a HUGE hit and a miss. Tons of 04's are back for work, but the 05 and newer are still running strong. I feel that is was blown out of proportion. For me, i love the ford styling vs. the chevy and the dodge. I feel it's more visually pleasing. But the Mega Cab Dodge is badass. I'm not going to talk about the Chevy due to the recent body change :yuck: If i could afford it, i would order a 08 PSD Crew Cab dually. But i agree with Jason, those that want the cummins motor would buy Dodge and those that haven't had problems with the PSD would go back. In the end, they're pretty much equal. I know the cummins and hemi motors sell like crazy, and you should see how many PSD's and F-150's go out on our lot. In the end, the whole argument about Ford vs. Dodge is just a waste of time.

I think i rambled enough

I spent the last 20 years or so driving Tractor trailers (off and on) and have logged PLENTY of miles on several different engines. The cats and Detroits (even the 60 series) are initially strong, but started to develop issues early, Not a fiew, every one in the fleet. (Blame it on the turbo, but we still had 4 ser. 60 D's run away on us and puke) All of them (cat's and D's) were leakers, and burners before they hit 400,000. I managed to get a 379 Pete with a 430 Cummins issued to me for exclusive use, and drove it to 800,000 miles before it lost it's first injector. It never let me down and other than PM's it stayed out of the shop. The mechanics loved the Cummins engines in the fleet (40 trucks) and had nothing good to say about the rest. It was my personal experience that made me buy a truck with a cummins engine. I figured that between what I drove first hand, and the experiences with 22 diesel mechanics loving them, it was a sure bet. And so far it has been. It's an 03 (bought new) Dodge quad cab auto trans, and loaded. It has beautiful manners on the road, is comfy (with heated leather) Gets 21 MPG on the hwy. and +-14 city, and pulls like a monster when needed. I work the devil out of it every day, and it has never given me the slightest problem. I would make the same choice again without thought!
