My buddy is wondering how well an XJ would be able to tow a nissan 240sx (~2800 lbs) on a tow dolly. This XJ would have the 4.0/AW4 but have 4.5" of lift and 31's.

Should be ok for a short trip. I dunno much about towing on the road with an XJ, I just use mine to pull dead vehicles out of a field at work. 4-Lo works good :)

If you're still wondering....
I towed a fiero on a car dolly with the same setup with no problems. Took it from Tuscon to Phoenix (100+ miles)
My buddy with a 4.0 ZJ did the same with a fiero on a u-haul trailer. No issues either.

I used my stock 87 XJ (the non HO 4.0L with AW4) to tow a 16 foot enclosed trailer that weighed about 3500 pounds and had the aerodynamics of a large barn from North Dakota to Michigan (about 1000 miles) and 2 years later from Michigan to Texas (about 1400 miles) and had no issues at all.
pulled a 240sx about four different times with a dolly, works just fine. have a 4.0 with ax15, had a little trouble one time up a steep driveway with 3.07 gearing and 30s but with proper gearing should be no problem. only thing is if renting the dolly from uhaul, tell them you're pulling something lighter like the 88 civic i always tell them. i think the 240 weighs more than they'll let you pull with an xj.
