Saw 'em from a distance at the Texas State Fair today, looked really good in person. The fender vents are :pimp: We didn't get a chance to check them out up close, but we'll be going back to the fair again soon to see all the new vehicles.

When I saw the first spy shots of them in the camo, I thought the new headlight design looked ugly, but now seeing them in person without the camo, I think it looks really good.

http://www.fordvehicles.com/Trucks/2008superduty/

Some cool new innovations on the new rigs, like a fold-out step for the tail gate and a flush-folding bed extender.

Yup... but as usual, Ford has to top them.

What is it with the new designs they are coming up with? They all seem to be heading in the same direction... the headlights get smaller and pushed towards the edges while the grilles get bigger and bigger...

Looks very nice on the outside, and that interior is just badass.

I like how they seperate the SuperDutys from the F150s. Since they are two completely different trucks, they should look different.

I wonder when they will be hitting the dealer lots.

Aftermarket bumper companies are going to love the fact that the bumpers are now flat all the way across the top. Much simpler to build for.

The lower headlights should help out in areas that have "headlight height" laws for lifted vehicles.

Jeepin Jason
09-30-2006, 04:22 PM
... the grilles get bigger and bigger...

there's a trend towards using the grille as means of branding the vehicle. Like Jeep with their 7-slot grilles and Dodge with their cross-hair grilles. Kinda like the thankfully short-lived trend towards bigger and bigger logo emblems (that may have just been Cadillac though).

Functionally though, a bigger grille allows more airflow and a larger radiator for better cooling, which is especially important on the diesel trucks.

The new trucks can't come out until all the diesel pumps in the US are converted to the new ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.

So we'll see the new diesel first, then the new diesel trucks. ULSD rollout began back in June, and is supposed to be completed by Jan 1st.

I really like the outside, all except for the front. The grill and headlights are :thumbsdow .

I am not a big fan of the interior too. I can't stand silver plastic interior that is supposed to look like aluminum or something. I think it is prob functional and confortable, but I just don't like the look.

the grille and headlights are some of the main things they changed for the '08 trucks.

I am not a big fan of the interior too.

That's the other main thing they changed... (visual things anyway).

So basically, you like the 07 and older trucks...

Pretty sure it's a Dana 135 (drop-out 3rd member :brows: ). That's actually the F450, which is a bit different of a truck than the F250 and F350. The dually in the very first pic at the top is also an F450. You can tell by the larger rims and fender flares.

IMHO Ford is kinda cheating by putting that commerical duty truck in there. It would be like if Chevy started comparing their Kodiak trucks to the Dodge Ram or something.

They also have a vid on their site comparing the turning radius of the F450 vs the Dodge and GM 4-dr dually trucks. The F450 has a shorter turning radius, but it's front end isn't the same as a regular 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck, so it's not a valid comparison.

The F-450 and F-550 aren't that much different than the F-250 and F-350 trucks. They definitely aren't the commercial duty trucks. That's the F-650 and F-750, which are comparable to the Kodiak trucks from GM.

IMHO Ford just offers the most complete line of fullsize trucks. ;)

For the most part you're right, but they do have larger axles, at least in the rear, and the front is also a slightly different setup, though I'm not sure on the specifics.

I'd agree with you there. Remember, I almost got an F250. ;) My only point was that Ford putting the F450 in there is apples to oranges. Ford doesn't even have any info on the 450 or 550 on their regular website.

Exactly. There are differences between the F-350 and F-450, but there is much more alike about them than different.

It's not Fords fault that nobody has a comparable truck to the F-450 and F-550.

jason is right. the kodiak would be comparable in weight class to the f450/550. the 450/550 are medium-duty rated trucks built on a light truck platform, whereas everyone else makes medium trucks on medium truck platforms. those 450/550 trucks are not meant for personal use, nor is there any need for someone to have one for grocey shopping...

Actually the Kodiak line would be competition for the F-650 and F-750. The F-450 and F-550 are geared towards people that tow very large campers, horse trailers, etc. Around here, you see quite a few of them pulling DD duty. They give you a higher payload, higher tow capacity option without getting into the huge and impractical F-650/Kodiak sized trucks.

Here's competition for the Isuzu you posted.

I failed Hooked on Phonics. :p

I'm just basing it on what you see advertised and sitting on retail dealer lots. Around here, the Ford dealers all carry the F-450 and F-550 trucks for sale to everyday, non-commercial customers. The Chevy dealers don't have a single Kodiak truck.

Also, that link you posted is 4 years old.

well my point is that the f450 and f550 are class 4 and 5 trucks respectively, adn fall under the calsification of medium duty, thus being comparable to the trucks I posted, as well as a bunch of mitsu, international, and freightliner models, and many more.

and ford does list those on their commercial site, regardless of how the dealer chooses to market them on the lot. :p

Yep, they are in the same class when looking at it that way, but the Kodiaks, Isuzus and all the others you listed aren't marketed to the same people. The Kodiaks, Isuzus, and others in that class are mostly sold to commercial customers, and the equipment they have reflects that. Most are plain *** white, vinyl seats, rubber floor generic looking trucks. Not exactly comparable to a King Ranch F-450. ;)

I only know of one F550 for "personal" use down here, and it is/was owned by a guy that runs a local 4x4 shop. He built a flat bed on it and just pulls his TJ up on the back when he's not pulling his 5th wheel camper. I'm sure there are other F450 and F550's pulling DD though, I just don't spot many. I see a lot of F450's used by the landscaping companies though.

The Ford dealership by us usually has one F650 sitting on the lot at all times though. :D

hwm3
10-02-2006, 02:50 PM
Since there isn't much to visually distinguish an F-450 from an F-350, there are probably many more being used as DDs than you realize. I'm not saying that it's common, but it's certainly much less rare than someone using a Kodiak or Isuzu NPR as a DD.

The owner of the Honda dealer here has a 6-door F-650 that gets driven around town a little. :)

Jeepin Jason
10-02-2006, 03:42 PM
the bigger wheel flares are a dead giveaway, and I probably pay more attention to the other vehicles on the road (particularly fullsize trucks, Jeeps, big SUVs, etc) than I should... ;) And when I've been thinking about a particular vehicle, like recently as we've gotten into the whole diesel truck thing, I notice them a lot more. I'm sure there are more F450's than I realize or notice, but 99% of the ones I see are brown and tan crewcab landscaping trucks full of about 6 'southern immigrants' towing a trailer full of weedeaters and mowers.

There was an 08 Superduty on campus this morning.....I'm not a fan of the headlights, but definitely not a bad looking truck. Ya thats a bit silly huh. That means that their pilots have been going down the line for almost a year. I guess these trucks are not super differant form their predecesor so their retooling proccess prolly isnt that bad.

I know everone wants to get a jump on the comp. but damn, a full 12 months early in comparison to the industry standard 6 months. I guess they need some money. Ive been in a few 08 Dakotas and Rams and we didnt even show them at the Auto show. The manufactures are nuts huh?

That blue/silver Fabtech truck was just featured on the cover of Diesel Power magazine.

The only reason I think Ford came out with them as MY2008 trucks is because they didn't/couldn't release them as '07's back in '06 (trucks possibly not ready and couldn't do the diesel until the new ULSD was available) and they didn't want to release MY2007 after 2007 had already started. IIRC Ford MY2007 SuperDuties have the old 6.0L PSD, not the new 6.4L that's going in the '08 models.

And with GM releasing their trucks as MY2007 vehicles, it sorta gives Ford a marketing edge (buy a 2008 Ford vs a 2007 Chevy). It's going to hurt consumers when it comes to resale value though due to the mileage -- used 2008 SuperDuties are going to have the same mileage as 2007 Chevys and Dodges.

i had my first orders in early December. I think production started the first of this month. I think they started retooling most of their lines (not all, still some 07's being built) back in november or such. But i don't know shiit about the production end.

We may have to take our CTD by the Ford dealership for a side by side comparison. The 6.0L was noticeably louder than our 5.9L. I've heard the new 6.7L CTD is super-quiet too, might have to go check those out as well if they're hitting dealerships already.

I think our local Ford dealership has about a half-dozen or so of the '08's on the lot now, and I saw some on a transport truck on my way to work this morning (one was a chassis cab truck :brows: ) I wasn't a big fan of the new style when I saw the first camo'ed spy shots, but now without the camo, and having seen them in person, the'yre pretty hawt.
