my wrangler keeps stalling out. i have to keep my foot on the gas at all times to keep it from cutting out. i know i need a new exhaust from the catalitic converter - back. would this most likely fix the problem, or are there any other ideas?

Check and or replace the gasket between the carb and the manifold.

Edit: The gasket tends to degrade after a while.

Sahara, I don't know what the problem is, but if you figure it out, let me know. I have a freind with a similar problem.

Try running some carborator cleaner or some fuel injector cleaner through it, depending on your engine. Ya never know, that could take care of it.Good luck with it. icon_smile_big.gif icon_smile_big.gif

well you said it needs a new cat replace it cuz that would do it. what else could it be hmmm... well alot of things damp weather with a carb would do it cold weather would do it... hell the ****ty jeep carb would do it. i would get an exhaust see if that fixed it. and in the long run plan on saving money to get a mopar fuel injection kit for it

I can tell you from personal experience. MY 89 wrangler has been acting the exact same way. I took it to just jeeps they took 3 days a new cat converter and some work to the carb. Went to pull it out of the parking lot and it was still stalling. they are going to put a different carb into it monday. I will tell you the results. If this isnt the problem then I would suggest that it is the ignition module that is everyone else's favorite theory. if you get yours fixed tell me what I should do! graemlins/icon_help.gif

OK, sounds like some good ideas for me to check. I knwo the carb is good - it's a weber carb that i installed brand new when i bought the jeep a year ago. I'm gonna get the exhaust fixed and i'll try some of the other ideas...I'll let ya guys know the outcome.

thanks for the help.

My jeep is back... kinda. It was the carb. Different carb apparently makes all the difference in the world. Power, smoothness I have it all again. Oh wait. no thats right it wont freaking start now!

OK, so good news. I haven't been able to try replacing the exhaust due to lack of funding (aka, I'm rediculously broke and the debt collectors have a ransom out for me). But, since my little Honda Civic has died from this rediculously cold New England weather  , my pops has agreed to aid me in repairing the Jeep (mostly so I'll stop taking his truck from him graemlins/laughing.gif ). I'll let you all know the outcome of the exhaust replacement...I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it will resolve the stalling issue.

sounds alot like an ignition system problem checked the dist cap & rotor button for wear/corrosion, checked wires & plugs could be part of the distrubutor not sure of the exact names of its parts but most vehicles have a electronic module thingy thats prone to goin bad, my ex-wifes merc had a similar problem i went through most everything i could think of & finally carried it to a mechanic, he found the fault & fixed it.. i was out $350, good luck

For sure the plugs, wires, dist, etc would be good, rather inexpensive ways to try and fix this problem....

You sure your confident in the carb's performance?? Just wonderin'.....but if you said its new......

You've really got my curiosity sparked on this...can't wait to hear how it comes out....

Oh yeah...Good luck...

This sucks...I'm going crazy without my Jeep in my life. I can't get her down to Meineke until later this week to get a new exhaust done, and I don't have any time to do it myself...hmm..anyone wanna let me borrow a Jeep???? graemlins/laughing.gif graemlins/icon_help.gif

you can borrow mine...

but it's in central PA, and you gotta go get it icon_smile_big.gif

unless you want to wait until march 8th, then you'll need to give me a place to park it until may 23rd (with some weekend visiting priveleges icon_smile_wink.gif )

OK, so I called Meineke and got the 411 on my Jeep. Definately needs a new exhaust from the cat back - but the stalling was actually a carb problem. Apparently something inside the carb is frozen, and the only way they can keep it running is by pourin on the gas. Soooo, they're sending the carb out to a specialist in NH. Should have my Jeep back sometime next week.
