View Full Version : Flat Towing (Gear shifter position?)

I know...another flat towing thread.

Here's the deal, got a new '52 CJ3A, has a towbar.

The question is:

What are the recommended gear shifter positions for flat towing?

The Jeep has 3 shifters:
R-1-2-3 (with Neutral)
2WD-4WD (NO Neutral)
High-Low (with Neutral)

What position should each of those shifters be in to flat-tow it?

We've been towing it in Neutral, 2WD, Neutral. It's been just fine, but I know there may be a "right way to do it" that we're not doing.

P.S. All original transmission, transfer case, and axles - just like an XJ, can't unlock the hubs, front driveshaft spins all the time

N, doesn't matter, N...then no matter what you just have some spinning **** in the t-case without winding the transmission

I figured as much, I had just heard rumors about really really old cars having to be in gear in the transmission, and Neutral in the t-case or vise versa - something like that.

you just have some spinning **** in the t-case
Only the outputs will be spinning.

Nah we like to flat tow it out to the farm and then tow it back to keep it in the garage.

I used to use AAA as the SeXJ's tow rig though :lol:

Bingo. And it's 54 years old. "Simply" unbolting something isn't so simple when it's 54 years old and was in a pile of leaves for at least 15 years of that (that we know about.)

Are you sure you wanna slat tow something like that? That seems to be asking for problems. Can't you rent a car hauler trailer from U-haul for like $50 and just not have to deal with all that?

your gonna start a restoration project and something as simple as removing the driveshaft to have the piece of mind something not gonna fawk up on ya is too much work

i dont think this is the right project for you..
so.
give me the CJ,
and get yourself a jeep powerwheels and paint it camo or something :)

1) Who said we're restoring anything? We're DEFINITELY not restoring this Jeep - just gonna make it mechanically functional and aesthetically pleasing

Dad plans on flat towing it a lot - to the farm and back (30 miles) every week until we get it fixed up. It's doing just fine so far, and has done fine for the past 54 years.

I was under the impression it has been sitting for several years and there could be something wrong in the axles that would be bad to find out while flat towing.

If your dad has been flat towing it so much and its only 30 miles...why did you even ask????

It's been in use for the past 2 years - the guy my dad got it from is a close friend who didn't want it anymore.

I asked because I wanted to know if somebody out there knew of a "right way" or a "wrong way" to flat tow an antique Jeep, which obviously nobody did. I just wanted to do the right thing the right way.

It has nothing to do with antique. It has to do with drivetrain in it and how that drivetrain works.

This means Hunter would actually be physically touching the transmission to pull the shaft.....thats not good....
