Aside from some inaccuracies in their info and data, overall I think they did a very good and fair comparison of the trucks, even if the Dodge came in 3rd. The Dodge they used in the test was a Megacab dually though, which only comes with a shortbox right now. I really think they should have used a standard Quad Cab dually with the 8ft box, since the Ford and Chevy were both longbeds. Going with the Megacab skewed the numbers for the Dodge a bit IMHO, but I don't think it would have made a significant difference in the outcome. Like their recent FJ Cruiser vs XTerra shootout, it's a bit of a long article, but very good reading IMHO, regardless of what brand you're a fan of.

I agree. Good comparison. I am glad someone finally pointed out how loud the Ford's were. The 6.0 reliability ruled it out for me. If that hadn't the wife would have said no. We drove one and the powerstroke was so loud it was really annoying. Now everytime we hear one going by or at the light next us, we just roll our eyes. Not a bad truck, just not one I could put up with.
I would like to see the Mega Cab with a longer bed and more standard dually flares. I am not sure how it affected the test since it didn't get in the way.

The F250 we looked at was noticeably louder than our Megacab, inside and especially outside. The reliability of the 6.0L is really what ruled it out for us as well.

It seemed that the only mechanical thing the dodge did poorly in was the transmission - which is getting taken care of soon it appears. Everything else they decided it lacked in was just due to Dodge not having a comparable body style yet I guess.
Still a good read though. I'd like to drive one of the larger Chevys sometime (my last experience was a '94 3500HD diesel flatbed, which I'm sure they've improved on), but as of right now I just like the cummins stuff better.
With so many 'other' companies producing the parts for these trucks these days, it almost makes brand loyalty obsolete if you really think about it.

I have been hearing about that. Is it in the autos or manuals? And doesn't it happen around 70k miles?

I think he was talking about the fact that the Dodge trans used behind the CTD is only a 4-sp, compared to the 5-sp used by Ford and the 6-sp used by GM. But if I read some info right on a Dodge forum earlier, Dodge is going to a 6-sp with the CTD for the late '07 models

Yep, exactly.
Doesn't change the fact that the 48re really isn't that great anyway though...however a buddy of mine with a '95 3500 Ram dually diesel has about 210k on it and it still works fine.

Engine - Cummins, but the newest Duramax are probably on par
Tranny - auto Allison , manual Dodge
It sucks that the Chevys don't have SFA and there is nothing on the Fords I like too much. The 6.0L is a joke.

No way dude. Duramax has had more TSB's issued and a lot more warranty claims.
The Dodge manual (NV5600) is actually made by New Venture Gear, which was a spinoff from GM a while ago. And the axles are AAM, which was originally a division of GM as well, and the AAM1150 axle in the rear is based of the original GM corporate 10.5" (14FF) design minus the removeable pinion support.
Like I said, brand loyalty is somewhat obsolete these days.

I thought the issues were with pre 04.5 Duramaxes? My uncle has an 06 and its been perfect so far.
BTW, I am a Chevy man till the end when it comes to gassers.

Yeah, the only thing Jeep on a Jeep is the engine block - they've got Aisin transmissions, New Process transfer cases, Dana axles...

Yeah, I am a Chevy fan, but those 6.5 diesels were junk.
The first gen Duramax LB7 had the problems. Injectors basically going out becuase of the low lubricity in modern diesel fuel. GM extended the warranty on the injectors and takes care of them. The newer LLY was much better. It still had some problems (I am not blind even though I like GM). The new LBZ fixed the problems they were having on the LLY and got the 6 speed allison. That is why I waited to order my truck until the LBZ was available.

is there a "big book of acronyms for newbies" that has Chevy stuff in it? (ie: LB7, LLY, LBZ... :dunno: )

Just the diff gen's of the duramax. Kinda like the Power stroke has the 7.3, now the 6.0 and soon to be 6.4 or 6.7 I believe.
On another note. The one thing I really liked about the Fords......integrated trailer brakes from the factory. I don't see why Dodge and GM haven't done this too.
