Ok so the ramcharger is home :D drove an entire 8 miles or so without a stall.

Big issues though Still running rich, opened the carb back up and the primary metering rods werent seated right fixed that before i drove it back. But it remained rich. If I get on the throttle the truck just stumbles on itself and spews black smoke. It seems like the secondary throttle plates are opening but the flaps arent?

Up until the point that it stumbles it has gobs of power... I made sure the float level is right and that the metering rods are seated properly and the 87 quadrajet doesnt have mixture screws that are sloted or anything.

SO for the short of it,

1)What would cause the 360 to spew black smoke?

2)What would cause the rig to stumble when I get on it?

3)What would be causing the secondaries to not open?

I read that it could be the choke not being adjusted right in the Chiltons Manual, How would you adjust the choke? Could that even be it?

Jerk the choke off of it; it's worthless anyway.

Is this the original, stock carb? Sometimes when guys swap Q-jets they don't pay attention to what the "new" carb came off of, and that can lead to trouble. Some of the big-block Q's were WAY up there CFM wise, so if it's one of those you could have too much carb on it. Which would make it run chitty.

Have you got a decent 2-barrel layin' around? If so, I'd put that on it. The 360 is stock, right? So a 2-barrel would be fine, and they're easier to tune.

Just my thoughts...

Yeah i got it running, just a lil rich in the secondaries.

ANd I'll be getting an edelbrock by the end of the summer.

A 2 barrel would do crap on this thing, there is a reason the 318 has no guts with a 2bbl and people swap the 360 intake/carbs onto the 318s.

And yes dodge used q-jets from 85-87 on the 360

dude, fwiw, i would keep the q-jet on there. throwing an edelcrap or a holley on there might make things easier to tune for you now, but they used the q-jet for a reason. your gas mileage will suck exponentially worse with a square-bore carb. get a book on tuning the q-jets and get that one right...
