I'm thinking about buying a winch for my YJ. What is the minimum pounds of pull that you think I could get away with? Would a 4500 or 6000 be enough?

How may of you guys have them and do you think it is a good investment for your Jeep?

I do most of my wheelin' alone (my Ford friends just can't keep up) and I thought it would be a good idea to have a winch.

It is all in your technique! I used to have a 2000 lbs. Warn utility winch mounted in the back of the YJ. Just open the door, pull out the cable, hook up to something, using the snatch block, I could get out of anything. For self recovery, a 4000 should be more then enough. Just get a snatch block for thoughs few times that you will need to double the power.

Well......I'm gonna take a little different approach....although 2-4k lbs would probably work....I really recommend getting something to the 6-8k range......yer vehicle weighs, what? Oh....3-3 1/2 thousand pounds???? Bury that in mud, or hang it up hard on something.....you may be maxing a 2-4k winch a bit.....

I use a Warn 8000 and sometimes I get a bit nervous about the max capacity on it....I also carry a snatch block......had to tug a tractor out of a mud pit once......

Anyway...my two cents....

I agree with Pete. Sometimes you're going the be half buried in mud, and pulluing up hill. I'd go with a higher capacity than 4k. I'd ping the weight of an XJ on the trail at over 4,000lbs. Remember you've got mods that all add weight and tools and camping gear to figure in.

I agree with the last two,. I run a warn 8000 and am very happy with it. A winch is a big purchase and you might as well get one that will last you throughout the life of your rig. Spend a little extra money to get a good one that you won't have to replace if you decide to go with bigger (heavier) axles, larger tires and other mods that will add considerable weight. Build it well the first time so you don't spend more money building it a second.

For a YJ a 8000 should be just right! I just ordered a Milemarker electric 8000lb for my truck from 4Wheelparts for $414 w/free shipping, you could check that out if you wanna save a few dollars. It doesn't come with roller fairlead, but that is $63 if you want one!
I don't have mine yet so I can't say much about it, by I know Milemarker makes a hella Hydrolic winch!

A snatch block is just a pulley that you run the winch cable through. So you attach the snatch block to an anchor, run the winch cable to the snatch block and then back to your Jeep. What this does is effictivly double the pulling power of the winch, at the cost of speed. Using one snatch block you will be winching at half the normal speed but be able to pull twice the normal load.

Snatch blocks double the pulling power of any winch, or aid in angled pulls. They also reduce heat build up and amp draw.

go to warn.com and go to rigging attachments or accessories for winch's tongue.gif

Thats what I thought, so I ordered one!! I also ordered a winch bumper from BPIfab for $308, plus $40 to powder coat black. They also had free shipping right before X-mas, so I have a total of $825 in winch & bumper!!

Sweet! I want to see pics when you get the winch and bumper installed. Is that free shipping deal a limited time offer or do they always have that?

I just posted a topic in the swap meet cause i am a retard(it should be in jeep talk)that would relate well to this discussion. It is under Ramsey Winch. Maybe Jason will move it for me.
