First tow rig:
1982 Dodge D150 - 318/TF727/8.25... Removed the shell, towed once with it and it was disappointing, and it had too many problems, so I gave it to a friend:
http://www.steve88xj.com/misc/dodge15.jpg
2nd tow rig: 1999 Durango 5.2L 4x4.. doubles as my daily driver.
I towed with it last weekend and it did just fine, but did about 8mpg towing about 5,000 lbs. Still though, at least I was passing the semi trucks instead of them passing me like with the pickup above.
http://www.steve88xj.com/misc/durango01.jpg
I dig the Durango for now, but I can see myself having a better dedicated tow rig and a separate daily driver in the future.

2001 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton, short bed, regular cab, 5.9 V8, 46RE automatic, offroad package, 4.10 gears, skids, limited slip rear, tow package, 35x12.5R17 Cooper STTs, etc.
Bought it as a tow rig/DD but have done very little towing with it. What I have done it did very well though, especially for a SWB gasser.

5.9 ZJ to pull with. Trailer is a 23' custom built flatbed that my friend and I made about a year and a half ago. Electric brakes on both wheels, winch in the box, 3 different plugs, drive over fenders, etc. It's nice.
http://www.phatserver.net/~chris/towrig1.jpg
http://www.phatserver.net/~chris/towrig2.jpg
Gets roughly 10-11 MPG out to Pennsylvania and back, pullin 70-75 MPH the whole way, and is very comfortable while doing it. I couldn't ask for more out of it.

I've towed the Jeep once with it, when it was broken down, so it qualifies. In the future, when I can afford a trailer, it will tow more often.

Agreed. Ours is 18', and I couldn't imagine having anything shorter.
Just make sure to get something with brakes on at least one axle.
If you're going to use ramps (we don't, our rigs can get on and off our trailer by themeselves) I personally like ramps that slide in from the side. The carhauler trailer that we borrowed all the time before we got our own had ramps that slid out from the back and they were a real PITA to deal with because the trailer would always be flexxed and that would jam up the ramps under the trailer.

I have a 16' flat bed with a dovetail on it and it is perfect. If it stretched the wheelbase over 12'' id be hurting on space and the rear tires would have been on the tail of the trailer.

Dub, I was actually thinking of going the Suburban route..but you only get 6-9 mpg :o Hell, I get 9-11 with the Hoe :squint:
Thouhts? I like the third row...and the added room..but if gas mileage is that much worse..no. what did you get w/ out towing?
B
Jeepin Jason
08-08-2006, 12:40 PM
Our mileage was crap because we had a Denali... which means fulltime AWD, plus the big 6.0L. Plus we had fat Nitto tires on it. Add all that together, and it makes for crappy mileage.
A regular Suburban, with a 5.xL V8, in 2WD, with normal tires, or even AT's like your Hoe, should get better mileage. So basically... avoid the 6.0L, avoid AWD, and don't put fat racing tires on it. Definitely try to find one with the load-leveling rear suspension though, that was da bomb!
Once we decided that we really needed to get rid of the Denali, our first choice was one of the brand new '07 Suburbans. But the more we thought about things, the more we decided that we really needed a pick-up vs a Suburban, and really wanted a diesel. Plus there were a bunch of little nit-picky things that were changed on the '07's that I didn't really care for, though there were also a lot of things that I did really like.
Other than that we loved the space in that vehicle. That's one of the reasons we got a Megacab -- closest thing to a fullsize SUV with a bed on the back.
Cobound
08-08-2006, 12:50 PM
yeah, when I finish school (get back into the real jobforce again) I'll be looking for a diesel. I like the fact that you can put a camper in it...and still tow a trailer. Can't do that w/ the Hoe. That is the one downside I see right now. Camping and Jeeping go hand in hand...
Unless I get rid of the tow aspect..and drive the Jeep there w/ it on the back fo the Jeep. Don't like that idea. Just can't go as extreme as I like to w/ the Jeeeping :D

Jason, why did you decide that you really needed a pickup? I understand wanting a diesel, but why did you decide on "open storage" vs. "covered storage"?
I also came apon this same choice. Dodge finally filled the gap with the huge back seat. You just feel better about throwing wood, tools, jeep parts and anything else kind of dirty in the bed of a truck. I kinda like to have the choice of keeping the filth seperated from the clean. Although third row seating is out of the question, I cant see any vehicle having as grand of a back seat in this catagory as the megacab. Not to mention I get a huge discount with dodge. The long bed ND will be nice.
As for Jason I think he explains to you his answer in a differant post, I remember seeing it somewhere.

We decided to go with "open storage" vs "closed storage" for many of the same reasons Phil listed. While there's been few times when we needed more storage than the suburban offered, we used it very much like a pickup... loading the backend down with lumber, mulch, bricks, flagstone, gravel (in bags), etc. Not to mention camping gear, the dogs, etc.
And it's really not so much that we wanted "open" storage -- one of the first things we added to the truck was a tonneau cover, and we're thinking about eventually getting a topper or a softtop for the bed -- as we wanted "seperated" storage.
In fact our first choice for a tow rig when we were looking at getting our first one was a Chevy Avalanche, but at the time they were still fairly new on the market and relatively expensive, so we got a Tahoe. Then realized we needed more space, so we got the Denali XL, and while the 3rd row was great for long trips with Jen's folks, we realized that a 4-dr truck would really have best-suited what we needed.
bigbasstj, that's a sweet setup! Someday we'd like to get a big RV like that.

And the Silver Dodge on the right is my father's '02 with the same drivetrain, except with all the trimmings, though i like the rubber floor covering in mine way better than his carpet. The gooseneck behind mine is ours, and the other one was borrowed from a friend to get everyone out to Moab.

I have a 2001 Ford Supercrew 4x4 with a 5.4 and I have yet to tow a Jeep behind it but I regularly tow a boat to wake comps. all over Oklahoma. I think it tows pretty good, I just keep it out of OD and cruise about 70mph.

:o Nice truck(s). What kinda weight did you have on that trailer? What size axles?
I'm planning to pick up a 12valve this Sunday on my trailer. The only problem is that it will be sitting about 900-1000 lbs over my axle ratings.
It's getting towed a solid 100 miles, so i'm not doing it if it won't be safe.

I think the biggest thing to worry about will be the trailer tires. If the tires aren't rated for more than the axles, it won't be safe. I have no doubt the axles can't handle an extra 500 lbs each.

If it's a standard cab longbed you should be fine, the bed will hang off the back of the trailer a few inches, and the tires will be on the beavertail. Just don't put it too far forward and extremely make tight turns. If you do the truck on the trailer will contact the tow rig.
FWIW, I towed a 79 F250 275 miles to upstate NY, I also had a 79 F250 on it from VT to NY about the same distance on that trailer with no issues. In addition to an 84 F150 on 36's that had a bunch of junk in the bed from Elmer, NJ to my house.

What difference do "trailer" tires make.
I had a goose-egg come up on one in nowhere, North Dakota of mine and I R&Red it with a LT tire off the shelf.
Is one prefered over the other?

After towing with car tires on the trailer vs. ST (special trailer) tires, I would never recommend to anyone to use regular car tires.
It's basically the way they're designed & constructed...they're much more suitable for the dynamics of following a vehicle (sway control & directional stability) than for propelling one (sidewall and tread cap conformance to the road surface, sidewall shear, etc).
Basically with a trailer tire, it'll have less sidewall flex so you'll reduce the possibility of trailer sway, they'll have a very hard rubber compound to make the tire stiffer and last longer (only need to provide traction when braking), and they're designed to be used on a non-damped suspension (much harsher than a tuned automotive suspension). So if you put a trailer tire on a car it would ride and handle like absolute crap, where a car tire on a trailer would wear much quicker and cause you to lose stability.
The biggest problem is going to come from the tire bands themselves heating up - the harsher suspension and larger sidewall loads can wear out the bands a lot quicker, which is what causes a sidewall blowout. Having trailer tires that are underinflated can also make that happen, for the same reasons.

They are also more suitable for the scrubbing a trailer tire sees that a car tire does not.

Unless that thing has a P7100 pump, then it ain't no sleeper. . .
How is that?
A VE can be as fast as a P-pump to a point... Never get much more the 600HP out of one even with a 14mm VE pump but the 1500 lb/ft in a 5000# truck with a boosted 4x4 launch is a HELL of a sleeper. Besides... It's easy to make power from a p-pump, I like the challange and I consider teh 1st gen dodges to be the "Classic" Diesel's... Not alot of them doing anything... I never expect to be the fastest or the best at the track/pull... Put the last two pulls it put me in third... one foot out of second once. And for the $3,000 I have in it I think that is fine with me.
I wont even guess at power numbers right now (hitting th eDyno end of next month) but with the pump turned up, injectors, turbo, and BHAF Right Now she will run with my turned up 06 till about 65-70 then the non-overdrive tranny kicks it's ***...

I didn't realize that you'd done that much to it. . . that thing must be a hoot! However, you won't see much over 500HP with the VE pump. I've been doing research on these engines, and I love them as much as you do.

Thanks.

It by a Texas company called Ranch Hand. There are a number of companies here that build bumpers of a similar style, ie: pipe and diamond plate, but I think Ranch Hand is one of the biggest and they've been around for over 20 years.

I thought I'd toss mine into here. It's an '05 Chevrolet K2500HD Duramax/Allison. WAY to many mods to list, but they are all done to make the towing even easier than before. You know us Texans, we can't leave our trucks stock. :chug: I usually pull our 28KS Desert Fox toy hauler with either bikes or quads inside. That setup weighs in around 20-22000# combined depending on the toys in the back. I pull the Jeeps and farm equiptment on a flatbed and cattle in our 26' gooseneck cattle trailer. Here's a few pics.

Guess I should finally post mine up here. Im sure I have the smallest tow rig on here short of the Grand Cherokees posted. It does what I need though. 07 Silverado 1500 W/T (work truck) with the 5.3. Factory towing package (heavier susp, limited slip rear, reciever/wiring, tranny cooler), W/T convience package (power locks and CD radio). Came with the cargo management system that I took out the first day and put in the garage. Factory deep tint, dealer installed trailer brake controller and bedliner.
Pretty basic truck but does exactly what I need and we paid about 5k under sticker with full extended warranty and gap. Gets 16-17 MPG mixed driving and breaks just over 20mpg on the highway. Rides better than the wifes new G6.
The wheels I snagged off of a z71 in the yard, interchange shows 04-07 so they arnt too out of place and look alot better than the base steelies that came with it. Waiting on a decent 07 to come in to snag the electric window setups (I forgot how much of a pain manual windows are in a truck).
Dont have a trailer yet but I do have some in the family that are available for use when I need them.

Yeah, the salesman were trying to get me to go with the 4.8 with the higher geared rear because more were available (same tow rating) with the features I could afford. But I told them no way for durability and fuel milage (4.8 already gets worse milage than the 5.3 before the higher gears). Had to dealer trade mine out of Oklahoma but it was worth it

A few of my fellow rallyists use vans for tow rigs, they love em. One of my friends uses an older ford diesel van, and the Last Ditch Racing crew use a diesel Dodge Sprinter van. They seem to work quite well.
Thought I've posted in this thread already. Guess not. 02 7.3L Diesel Crew Cab SB. ATS trans, 4.56 gears, DP Tuner, etc.

The hemi is a dog of a towing motor, the 4.7 has a lower power band, which works rather well for a towing motor. I've driven both with loads and the 4.7 just is a better truck motor. I actually find the hemi to be a huge disappointment.
Still I wont buy a truck without a diesel...
