OK, so I have this 231 out of a 96XJ that a friend of mine was given for free, with only the busted Tcase, and he replaced the Tcase and is driving it now. He was tossing the Tcase but I told him to give it to me. I've been taking it apart for spare parts, and to learn more about how it works, etc.

So I've gotten it apart without taking the front yoke off. I pulled the cases apart enough so that the chain was misaligned and then rotated the front yoke and after fighting with it enought the chain came off. Finally today I was able to get the snap ring off that holds the gears on the output shaft, but bending the piss out of it. My neighbor, a mechanic, has a snap ring plier set, but not exactly what you'd need for taking this Tcase apart. It's just not cutting it for getting the ones off where the seal and bearing are....but that's actually not even why I'm making this overly long post!

Between the oil pump and the bearing, there is this metal ring. Aluminum I think. A washer of sorts...but the outside edge is beveled at greater than a 45 degree angle...and it looks to be beveld that way because it was eaten up from something. Again, inbetween the oil pump and the output bearing, where the speedo gear goes. It could be either connected to the bearing, or the oil pump...but I don't see where it got broken off of. To me, and my neighbor, it's pretty much a mystery how it got there. Any clues?? It doesn't seem to have come off of either the bearing or the oil pump...but it has to have come from either of the two....cause I can't even get that bearing or the oil pump off to put something there if I wanted to!! I would assume that, from the damage in there that I see, mainly the front of the case having a crack and the 4lo range fork being F'ed that the oil pump failed....

Any ideas?

*sorry for the rant

I looked at a blow apart and didn't see anything that should be there. Kinda hard with out pics but heres a link:

On a side note, want to sell the Front Yoke for cheap? I need one :D

Well I can't seen anything that should be there in that scematic either, and even without looking at it, logically I just can't see where the F the thing came from!!!!!!! It being there defies logic..AFAIK.

I would sell you the front yoke if I could get it off!! I'll have to bring it somewhere where they have an impact. I tried using a prybar to get the thing off...but when it's not attached to anything, just sitting on a piece of plywood in my gravel driveway it's kinda hard to keep it steady enough to apply enough of a shock load to get the yoke nut off.....but I'll see what I can do.

Why is yours junk?? What happened??

Just guy buy an impact and an air compressor, its worth it :D Nah, I don't have a 231 but the front yoke is the same spline count as my D300 and it makes it so I can put CV shafts on :D

Pipe wrench to hold the yoke.

Lockring pliers are what you need (flat tips), snapring pliers (round tips) won't get you very far.

Verrive I have a yoke for you if he can't get that one off. Let me know if ya want it.

I seem to remember a washer type peice on my buddie's main shaft when we installed his SYE. I don't know where it was though. Does your oil pump still have splines in it?

impact FTW.

...but that's how I did mine the first time, when it wasn't in the shop.

Well I need to buy a pipe wrench, and LOCKring pliers. With the snapring pliers and a few screwdrivers we got the gears off the output shaft. It's not working too well for the smaller lock rings though.

I wish I could afford an impact. I can bring it to a friends and they'll do it for me though. I was just doing this out in the driveway and in the basement in the evenings while relaxing, for feces and giggles. So I'm learning what it takes, what little issues I'll run into and whatnot for when I have to take apart the Tcase on my DD XJ to do an SYE. I was considering maybe having a friend throw this output shaft into a lathe to do a hack and tap with mad precision....?

The teeth are still on the pump. I haven't taken it apart as of yet though. This so-called washer is a mystery part!!

Wouldn't it be cool if some Jeeper who worked for Craftsman or some tool company someday put together a tool set that you could buy that had EVERY tool that a jeeper needs? That way I could have one set that came with holders and such for every little socket and wrench, etc. for the garage and keep my whole current pieced together set in the jeep! As it is, I never find out that I've misplaced a tool until I go to use it.

Sears sells a pair of lockring pliers that are perfect for the NP231, I'll post the part # when I get a chance to check, but they are a regular stock item.

I'm not sure about that "extra" part thats worn, Ive been through a few of these 231's and it doesn't ring a bell with me.
