What year? What Model? What Engin? Could be a host of problems, leaking or broken vacum lines, backed up cat, bad fuel filter.......

it is a 99 cherokee 4.0L straight 6 cl.
I am thinking it is a prob w/ the fuel filter, or at least hopeing, but when i hit the gas nothing happens the lights dim then it sputters a little then stalls

It sounds like a fuel problem, first I would replace the fuel filter(cheap)and if its not, you can rule that out!
BTW the filter is on the inside of the frame rail, just in front of drivers side rear wheel. Just in case you didn't know!
