Anyone ever done this? I had seen a thread on it on the old board, and remember someone saying something about just a light coat of black paint would work?? Ever hear of that, or maybe that spray on window tint crap?

I hate to go look on some ricer forum if one of my little Jeep buddies have the answer for me!!

Thanks Jeep buddies!

yea, there's a type of really watery lookin black spray paint that ppl use to black out their tail lights. it's basically window tint in a can and it can be found and the majority of sucky car parts stores, ie. autozone etc

I'd get the stuff made for lexan rc bodies, so it has no chance of fogging the plastic

I googled and found an article where some Acura dude did his. I went to a hobbie store today and bought some special spray-on window tint for models. I forgot it at work tonite, but hope to test it out on some old spare lights for my '89. I'll do the ones from my '00 later if it works. **** is $4.33 for a tiny little can.

i frequent a dodge dakota messageboard and some have done that over there.

Well, I had talked to a few of you... and I had mentioned that I was looking for something new for my taillights.. and that I wasn't sure if I was getting tired of my TYC Chrome tail lights...

So I saw what alot of people did with the nightshades.. and I liked it. So, I sat out and started getting the supply ready for getting some stockers tinted.

Thanks to Beth for helping me out with one stocker.. the other was cracked...

And I got the VHT nightshades from Summit Racing.. along with picking up some 2000 grit sandpaper for some light scratches on the stockers..

Heres a shot I think 2nd or 3rd coat of the VHT.

This process took a few days.. and I wanted to leave ample drying time inbetween.. so that I wouldn't have to worry about if the coats were dry enough... I put on 4 coats of clear... and they came out like this...

Now.. I put them on my truck.. and I love em...

I wanted to test it out to see how much light got through... and this is what it came up with..

Alright.. enough photos for me... one weekend project down... a few more to go

Thanks Fitch. I'm gonna do my stockers first, then may end up doing my alteeza's (or whatever they're called) if it turns out like I want it to.

I've seen it on eBay

But, do you really want your taillights, although barely, dimmer?

No sense in that, IMO.

actually there is an easy solution to this, just run led's in the housings, they'll just dim the leds to be as bright as stock

Those Dakota ones look pretty sweet. If my truck were black I'd probably do that and run LED bulbs like Fanatic said.

I did a test last nite. It is prone to runs, but looks cool! More later.

did ya put it on too thick? wonder if a lot of really light/thin coats would keep it from running?

The stuff is really thin (even smells different than paint, kinda like thinner), and I did it about 6 coats or so, it looked good when I got done with the last coat.

But, I did it in my capped garage last nite and let it dry overnite before I even touched it. When I looked at it this morning, it have made a run that wasn't there last nite....it kinda pooled and ran over the edge of the assembly and down the side a bit. The temp in my garage is prolly in the upper 50's to lower 60's, so I'm not sure if temp had anything to do with it, or whether it was just the moron who applied it.

This is why I started with an old pair of spare lights for my '89. Once I get good at it, I'll do the stockers from my '00!

I did use stuff made by Testors for models (local hobby store had it in stock), I think I am going to order a can of the Nite Shade crap and see how they compare.

I hear the best temperature for painting is in weather around 70 degrees without a breeze (so it dries slowly)
