When I take hard left turns, I get this god awful grinding noise. Someone at work said it was the rack and pinion going out, or the power steering fluid was low. I know its not the front tires hitting the leaves, because I already know what that feels like.

Any ideas? I am going to check fluid levels tomorrow, and make sure everything looks good underneath.

the only jeep with rack and pinion is the kj. so its not that going out. may need some fluid. its a grinding noise? well it does make a pressure release noise when turn all the way to one side. could be your brake rotors mine made a small grinding noise before i replaced them. Oh you have a gear box with a pitman arm rack and pinion i believe is only on ifs vehicles

Well, it makes a vibration, and I think the grinding noise could be my muffler hitting something, since my exhaust manifold is cracked, the muffler can move around and make some noise. But this is definetely not normal, I have never heard it before. But I will be sure to check the power fluid level tomorrow.

And I doubt if it is the brake rotors, those are less than 2 years old. I had to replace those when I didn't replace my pads, and then they ground groves into the rotors, oops  .

Where's the noise coming from? I have a Chewbacca noise coming from my steering wheel, but I think its funny so I'm keeping it until it gets annoying.
A few months ago, I had some "popping" noise coming from my front right wheel, and turing hard to the right would always trigger the noise, and then it would just pop pop pop, it sounded really bad. Then it just kind of stopped...I guess the ol' XJ fixed herself.
But I'm having grinding in my brakes(faint grind), I gotta do something! Quick!

Your tire could be rubbing on something. Look at everything in the wheelwell and see if anything got a nice polished shine to it. My tires hit my LCA's at full steering lock (even did it with my old 235's), could rub the leaf springs on a YJ.

It sounded bad.

My YJ makes a sometimes very scary metal against metal friciton noise when going around corners too fast. My prob is a loose exhaust pipe its right behind the passenger seat. Could be your prob too.

I think I figured it out. My left rear spring is slightly bent giving it more lift. So I think it pushes down my right side more causing the tire to cause vibrations that rattle the exhasut.
