I want to remove the swooshy silver stripes from my 93 T100.

http://filebox.vt.edu/users/hjsmith/HerbYota.JPG

I figure since they've been on for a little over 13 years, they're going to be a PITA to remove

Any helpful hints?

BTW, before anyone asks, ya, it's a 2WD

My post from a Yota board - who's got tips that are worth a ****?

They make some stuff to do that...comes in a spary can, and it'll remove stripes, woodgrain, crap like that.

it'll probably also come off with a heat gun.

I dunno where you can get it. The last stuff I saw was made by 3M.

get a heatgun, harbor freight cheapie would do the job, its just a sticker, should come off in no time with some heat... Of if you like, bring it down here in the summer, the 120+ temps in the summer should be plenty to make it fall off all on its own ;)

I've used a hair dryer to take the stealership logos off the back of my Jeeps. They come off real nice with a hair dryer. I know what you're talking about is on a much larger scale, but on a really warm day the hair dryer trick might just work. After you're done you can use some "goo gone" to get rid of the sticky stuff that is left (available at most big dept. stores and craft stores).

Good call. That might work ok.

Lucky for me, my lady has a hairdryer here. I'm gonna go try it, it's about 50 degrees F today, so kinda warm - I'll let you guys know how it goes!

id go with a heat gun, that takes off pretty much everything. its about twice as hot as a hairdryer.

Hairdryer's working pretty well, now I just gotta figure out how to get the goo off (buddy recommends acetone :dunno: )

3M Adhesive Remover. Comes in a small can like lighter fluid and costs about $6. Probably can get it at automotive stores and in the auto body section at department stores.

Most places use a little rubber wheel that goes on something like a Dremel tool to remove decals. The friction heats it up and it comes off in little balls.

So you're saying there's a little wheel that'll boogerfy my adhesive?

I gotta coat the surface in some sort of a petroleum distillate first though, right?

It is so damn fun asking a million questions like a n00b

Wal-Mart sells this stuff called "Goo-B-Gone". Works good shouldn't hurt your paint.
Or you could just scrub it off with some "Hokie Stone"!
Go VT!

Just kiddin!

Professional auto body places use these little Dremel tool looking things that have rubber wheels on the end of them. The rubber wheel heats up the decal and the decal rolls up, with most of the adhesive attached, into a ball. You usually take it off in 1/4"-3/8" strips. The heating is so localized and quick that it doesn't hurt the paint. It's a lot more efficient than using a heat gun.

Here are what the wheels look like:
http://www.watcon.com/watcon/Catalog_Pages/Decal_Removal_Wheel.htm

I usually use adhesive remover after the decal is gone.

EDIT:
And here is one kind I've used before (it doesn't work so well on vehicles without clearcoat) but haven't seen in years:

Interesting!

That's just a cheap-o soldering iron w/ an attachment.

I have a CARMAX logo I need to take off my Durango, I was just thinking of using the blow dryer trick.

It's actually probably a 100watt woodburner with an attachment... but who is counting? They seem to work best with large decals... the kind that are clear with ink sprayed on the back side. They usually have more adhesive. I still prefer the rubber wheel kind.

A small logo or any kind of die-cut decal can usually be peeled off with a fingernail or a nylon scraper.

I've peeled a lot of decals in the day... it's one of the reasons why I never put them on anything.

I got the stripe off with a hair-dryer

Then I got the adhesive off with a $22 can of "3M Woodgrain and Stripe Adhesive Remover"

Ouch!

ironic part is, 3M sells a majority of the vinyl for the graphics, so they're making money on both ends of that deal. i used to work at a place that designed and supplied RV graphics. we got probably 90% of our vinyl from 3M.

Why don't you still rock the spinnaz?? If I had that truck, I would! I love plastic spinnaz, if I could throw them on my jeep, I would. They would look pretty cool all busted up.

Only hubcaps I'd rock would be stock Toyota.

I'd prefer to find some stock Toyota alloys, though.

Looks good. Don't forget to wax where you removed the labels. 2 coats would be good.

All of that removing of the adhesive removed your wax coating too! Just a tip.
