First of all I'd like to say hello to you all.
I've recently acquired an 1994 XJ. Is it possible to fit 35" tires under this thing? If so how would you suggest going about it. What are some good kits to go with and which ones should I stay away from? I'd like to hear your suggestions even if they include taking a cutoff wheel to the body. :brows:
Thanks in advance!

I would go with a Rubicon Express 4.5" SuperFlex if you can afford it. I know a few people with this lift and they love it. Rubicon Express makes very durable lifts at a decent price. This is just my 2 cents other people may not agree.

I'm curious, will a 4.5" setup even with cutting wheel wells be enough?

Yes they will fit if you trim your fenders alittle bit. It should flex good too. The ideal lift would be a 5.5" but they are alot more expensive. If i was in your situation i would run the 4.5 with 33's

Yeah great post for Jeep Talk
This all depends on how much coin you wanna drop into everything. I personally wouldnt have any less than 5.5" for 35's. You gotta remember that a good suspension setup needs a fair amount of uptravel too. I have 4.5" with 33's and am marginally happy with the amount of lift i have. Of course, i have exactly 4.5" of lift.........most manufacturers give more than the advertised height. You also gotta get a SYE and CV shaft.........if you wanna do it right. Dont forget extended brakelines, bumpstops, wheels and gears.
If you have the money, check out some of the long arm lifts out there. My personal favorite is Full Traction's longarm setup. Another one i like is Rusty's long arms because they are simple. Both kits mentioned are all bolt on. If you know how to weld pretty well, Claytons is a big favorite for long arms. If you want a short arm kit, be sure to add RE drop brackets to whatever kit you choose. They make life with short arms alot better.

Dude you can fit 38's on a 3" lift if you REALLY want to... I know a guy that runs 36's comfortably on about 4" of lift, so anything is doable. If you feel like trimming a bunch, get a 3" RE lift. If you don't feel like trimming much, and you can spend more money, go for the RE 5.5" lift. It'll ride nicer than the 3.5" kit, but again, it's a lot more costly.

Funny......my 33's didnt fit properly with a 3" lift. I would have had to modify(read cut and beat with BFH) the unibody to get full clearance. Ya gotta have the right amount of uptravel to allow the suspension to fully cycle. Thats if you do things right or really dont care about having a well built rig. If stuffing big tires with a little lift in a mostly stock vehicle(read body in tact) worked so well, why do professional rock crawlers design their rigs with a suspension that is able to complete its full cycle? Yeah you can stuff 31's under a stock suspension and yes 33's will "fit" with 3" of lift, but it is nowhere close to a well performing and comfortable setup without major modifications like cutting and beating the unibody for clearance. And 38's on a cherokee with 3" of lift? Lets see it

from what i've done at the shop the i work at ,i wouldn't go any smaller then a 5.5 lift for 35's on a xj and you might have to trim some of the fenders off to make sure that you have the right look as well as performace, that you want out of you're lifted xj. and if you have the dana 35 rear end ditch that thing a.s.a.p

yeah...ok  take a look around most toobers and heavily modified rigs have 3-5" of up travel the rest being droop. There is no need for more up travel
Heres my take on things. You will need: SYE, Driveshaft, Lift, new rear axle, tires, wheels. gears, and there is no point in running 35's and being open front and rear. Unless this is just to cruise the malls with but I doubt it since you seem to be willing to cut some fenders.
oh and 4.5" of lift is all you need on a xj to fit 35's
