Can anyone tell me the correct fluid for the transfer case on a 1990 Jeep Wrangler with a Model 231 Transfer Case? Thanks.

From the top of my head I think it is Atuomatic tranny fluid Mercon/Dextron III or maybe II.
I would rather you get a second opinion though.

hmm i would assume its just atf+3 cuz the transmission in an xj takes that fluid. and the powersteering takes that fluid too. the plug is 30mm to let you knwo its a pain in the *** to find one. grrr. i had to go get a socket today. but i added atf+3 cuz thats the standard for chrysler products and thats what the tranny called for

I just swapped T-cases in my XJ and called the Jeep stealership with the same question to which "THE GUY" replied "Dextron 3".
Thats ok tho,I knew what he meant.

I think it really matters that it has fluid more than it matter what type, atf3 Dextron II III or something, take a cup of each & see for yourself theres not much difference touch, smell or taste, so there...

The t'case takes ATF 3, same as the tranny. The power steering takes regular power steering fluid. I just use a big adjustable crescent wrench to get the fill and drain plugs out, works like a champ.

I wouldn't trust the guys at the stealership when it comes to fluids. THe AX-15 requires GL3, but some mechanics at stealerships will telll you GL5, which eats up the synchros (so I'm told).

I'm running a 242.
RTF from Summit Racing. Good stuff.
I change mine twice a year, spring and fall. I was changing every 5000 for flush, till it changed clean
