my cousin's uncle's is selling his '87 gw. i think it has command-trac 4wd because he says it uses a vacuum line. it also has an amc 360 that's been rebuilt, donated from a different gw, with 10k miles put on it since. total millage is 120k, and it has power everything.
how reliabe are rebuilt engines? what are some common problems? he had it rebuilt at a moter shop in town (he has all the paperwork for it) and he says the only problem he's noticed is that it runs a little rich when starting up.
i'd like to get it because it'd be a nice weekend runner. i don't want to sell my (2wd) cherokee because i don't want to have something as old as an '87 be my daily driver.
thank-yee kindly
If I was you and I had the money to buy it I would b/c that would give you a project for awhile and if it does fail you get to have more fun and buy more upgrades!

an 87 grand waggy with a 360 and the selec-trac NP228 or 229 t-case (those are the vacuum operated ones)?
GO FOR IT!!!
the 360 is a torque monster (and a rather reliable engine at that) the tranny (probably a torqueflite or a TH400) is bulletproof and the 228/229 transfercases are pretty darn stout. the 228 has a center diff that locks in low range, the 229 has a viscous coupling that works well, but can be problematic if you don't change the fluid regularly or expose it to prolonged wheel slip. Both cases fully lock in 4-low
It'll have a dana 44 front and either a d44 or amc20 rear, the amc20 in the Grand Waggy has one piece axleshafts, and it it a pretty stout axle, comparable to the d44.
The carburetors on those can get a little goofy. if it's running rich on startup, that's not a bad thing at all. It's probably a maladjusted choke, which is a simple fix.
What's he askin for it?

too cheap to mention. i'm afraid if i say just how cheap one of you guys would go buy it before i get a chance.
just for morbid curiosity, how much do think he'd make if he sold it piece by piece?

it depends. if you parted it out over on IFSJA, probably about a grand or so.
but don't part it out. especially if it runs, drives and is in nice shape. that would make me sad :(

if i bought it, i wouldn't part it out. we need as many jeeps with solid front axles on the trails as we can get icon_smile_wink.gif
