I need to know which rear axle you've got.

Oh lord...AFAIK it's the D35. I've never been able to figure out what though. I'll go look right now if you tell me what to look for.

Also, the diff cover on the 8.25" has a rim around the edge I think, whereas the D35 diff cover is flat around the edges. The shape of the bottom of the diff is the main tell-tale though.

Sure is, its the upgrade from the 35C. Larger gear housing and larger axle tubes. Notice the 3" axle tubes instead of the 2.5" from the 35C.
Thats a good set up. Have heard few compliants with it.

Excellent. Not that I'm going to, but what is the largest size tire you can safely run on it. How is the strength compared with the D44??

If it's a '97+, you've got the 29-spline version, which is about on-par strength-wise with a D44, but it's still c-clip. Certainly capable of handling 33's or 35's if you upgrade the shafts.
Otherwise it'll have smaller 27-spline shafts, the same size as a D35 has. It's not hard to upgrade to the 29-spline shafts, you just have to change some bearings and seals on the housing ends and the spider gears in the diff.
