Overview:
My friend has a 85 bronco with a 351 (windsor I think). He is in the process of fixing it up. It runs ok, but we don't think we are getting the full potential out of the motor. You would think a carbed V-8 would be simple to fix up, but this motor has the biggest clusterfawk of vaccum lines and a labyrinth of all kinds of emmission control hoses. Half the the vaccum hoses that are part of the emission control system lead to no where, or have holes in them.
My Plan:
I want to strip down the motor of all the stupid clusterfawks of emmison control lines, leaving the main passive devices such as the cat CCV, and PCV lines. I would think that the motor would need a new carb, as the stock carb is meant to function in accordance with all these active emission control devices.
Questions:
-What all in this engine bay (pics below) could I strip out?
-If I do strip all the emmissions crap out of the engine, would I need a new carb
-There is an object that looks like an AC compressor mounted on the front of the motor, however no belt is attached. My friend calls it a "smog pump". wtf is a smog pump and what does it do.

-The line off the smog pump splits off and enters into the back of the block on two places, if I unplugged that line, would I have to seal the holes in the back of the block?
More pics of the motor:
