View Full Version : Too much lift for 33's?

I have just finished building my long arm setup and will be getting my 8" Skyjacker coils in a couple of days. YEE HA! Now, the problem is, I had 33x12.50x15 boggers with 6" of lift and minor trimming. Now I will sit at around 8-9" with Major trimming (already done) and I'm concerend the 33's will appear "tiny". I know I'll have tons of clearance and flex, but I'm thinking about going to 35" MTR/s. This brings my next problem. I just put 4:10's in my d30 and 35c. The 35c has a lockright. I'm not too interested in changing the gears again as I just did it. Will the gears be too high for the 35's? Will the lockright survive with 35's? Will the d35 be too weak? Should I just stick with the 33" boggers that I'm currently running? Decisions, decisions....

well your jeep is gonna be able to rape about any decent trail w/ the 33's but they might look a little small on a huge 8" lift, but i mean hey, w/e floats ur boat.

No way man. Do you think 31's would look bad on a 4-4.5", no way. 33's are huge...they'll look good on anything. Trust me, don't waste money on new meats just cause they don't "look big enough"

I should have been a little more clear...the boggers are almost toast so I need to get new tires anyway. Just can't decide on what size. Plus, I drive my Jeep on the street and the boggers are LOUD , so i'll be getting a more street friendly tire.

Well, I'm one of the ones who will say you're crazy for still having a D35 in that rig, but hey, if it's working for you... hope you got spares. Put 35's on that D35 and it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when...
And yeah, 33's are going to look dinky under that much lift, especially with heavy trimming. Heck, my 33's looked puny with 5.5" and Bushwacker flares...
It sounds like your setup was working already, why add the extra lift?
My vote, go with 33" MTR's and keep the suspension the way it is, maybe you've got your reasons for going higher, but I don't see any.

i agree with jason. i was thinking the same thing before i read his post. its not a matter of if its a matter of when. i am suprised nothing has happened yet. but thats good though. with that aside
i would go with 35's cause it will look funny. i hate it when a tire doesnt even come close to filling the wheel well up. so with you needing new tires and having a decent gearing setup i would go with 35's easy. goodluck!

Well sounds like you got a lil bit of cash to toss around. How about you throw in a different axel, then go for big ol' meats, but then you won't have the gears... man. You would lose some money, but your Jeep would look a lot more badass sittin up real huge. I agree with J-Skrillio though. You will snap that D35 like a tooth pick rollin on some glazed donuts. It may look nice, but them big glazed tastey treats are gonna rip it to shread.
Edit: How much moola you got to spend? Any limit?

pfffffttt....money is no object!! I'm loaded!!!.....NOT!!! graemlins/crazy.gif C'mon man, I'm a cable guy!! I do, mind you, have just about every channel available to man. If I was loaded, I'd have dana 60's and 40's on my XJ! And ARB's and, and, and ooohhh just thinkin' about it makes me horney!!!!
I know I will have to eventually break down and replace the 35, but I was just curious how it work for now. I only wheel about once a month, if that, due to time restraints.

you can try it... but just remember its only a matter of time untill you will get seriously hurt, and your XJ will have much more problems after your climbing a hill and your axel breaks and you total your jeep. Just an idea.

To put things in perspective for ya, I have a Dana 44 on my TJ with 35's and am kinda worried about blowing it if I get it locked. Plus locked with 35's means you get to start worrying about the 30 up front as well. Damn nation.

Have you ever thought about going to a junkyard and getting a dana 44 off a YJ or 2.5L TJ which i think both have 4.11 gears.Swop that axle in and grab some 35s definently would be more expensive but if you could afford it it would be worth it.Also i havent heard to good a things about MT/Rs in the mud but if you are on rocks they are awesome.I would go w/ Xterrains if you are mudding alot but not much can compare to boggers.

Here's my thoughts on this whole thing. Its all a matter of what you define as "wheeling" because lets be honest here. Anyone one of us could own an XJ with a Dana35 outfitted with 4.10s and a EZ locker and 35 inch Boggers and never break an axle. Its all a matter of how you drive it. If you beat on it, eventually it will break. If you just go trail ridin and want 35s then you know you'll be fine.
I have broken both my front U-joints on my 30 several times and sheared 4 axles on my D35 with 4.56s and 33s. Was it my fault? Yes. But I accept that I am going to break and have many spares that come with me on Offroad trips. So its up to you, you already know you are making your weak link weaker or you wouldnt be asking.
So buy them especially the MT/Rs because you know they are going to look Bad ***!!!!

Anybody got any spare axles cheap???

Unfortunatly, used Jeep parts are hard to come by here as there is a place that deals in used and wrecked Jeeps and usually scoops them up before anyone else gets a chance.
Now I don't want to sound like a dick here, so please don't take this the wrong way. I like to get opinions from people who have had actual experiences and not "well I heard this" and "I heard that", just because some guy with 500 posts read something somewhere and spreads it on other forums and everyone takes it as "gosphel".
i.e. "Well I heard that hiem joints are the best from Jeepgawd, so it must be true". Meanwhile, "Jeepgawd" is 15 years old, sits in front of his parents computer and answers EVERBODY's questions with what he read or "heard" from another forum...and he doesn't even own a Jeep!!!
I'm not saying that about anyone who replied to my post. Just look at it that way the next time you have a question and someone says, "well I heard...."

Thank you xj95jeep, that's and answer I can respect. By the way, I have a friend who has a TJ with a d30 and a d44 with 4:56's and ARB's front and rear and he runs 37" boggers. He's replaced u-joints, but has never broken an axle. It's his daily driver and he 'wheels it alot. I also owned a TJ with a d30 and a d35c with 33's on 15x10's and I 'wheeled it alot also, I never broke so much as a u-joint. I have seen this first hand, so that's one reason I have a hard time believing some of the things I read.

Again, no disrespect to anyone.

Cablesmurf you got any pics of your new setup yet? If not I would like to see it when your done. I am planning on going bigger myself and looking for ideas. I am not a very good fabricator but a decent mechanic so I am looking at buying a longarm upgrade either Rusty's or RockKrawler and adding that to the 8 inch coils from Skyjacker and doin a 6" leaf in the back with my lift shackles. Currently running a Tomken 6" with fender trimming and 33" TSLs.
Good Luck!

I'll have the pics on my web site soo, so I'll post them for you. Sounds like you're doing a similar setup to mine. I'm still installing everything but I should be done in a week or so. I post some progression pics in a day or so.
