My friend has a 1990 Toy 4Runner SR5, 5 spd. The problem is that when you are driving at 1500 rpm it makes this fast paced rattling noise possibly coming from under the hood?. It goes away at about 1800 rpm or when you let off the gas. While driving it there are no steering problems or wobble. After 1800 rpm it sounds/drives fine. It only does it while driving and not when you are stopped. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ryan

IMHO you can be looking at 2 things.... maybe 3.
1- throwout bearing or other part on the clutch system.
2- Bearing/yoke/smthg on the tranny/t-case output?
3- some loose plate/plastic on the engine room...
I know I didnt help much, but you have to give us some more stuff... :dunno:

I don't know what else to give you? If it was jeep I could have fixed it by now:).

Could it be the engine pinging or knocking? Spark knock could sound alot like something clanking around, particularly if it's engine speed related and not road speed related.
You don't feel anything when it happens do you?

No, there is no wobble or shaking going on anywhere, no wierd steering problems. The performance of the engine does not seem to be effected at all. Shifts fine, stays in gear, brakes are fine, no engine lights, gauges are ok. I am not that familiar with IFS, so if there is anything wrong with that, what would I be looking for? I know it is hard to solve a problem over the internet, but thanks for all the imput. Ryan

if it happens at 1500 rpm in any gear, it's not speed related. therefore it's not going to be the IFS, if it was you would probably feel it. It's probably a shield or gaurd somewhere.

I talked to my friend today and she said that it stopped. So I guess there is nothing I can do until it gets worse or something breaks. Thanks for all the help though. Ryan
