View Full Version : Tires STILL rubbing!!!
Ok after 4.5 inches of lift with my 32s, some major trimming and aftermarket flares and an ARB Bull Bar My tires rub on the corners of that bull bar. I had my Jeep At FULL tuck and turned hard to the left and that tire pushed and bent the corner of my ARB bar. I was thinking about cutting some bumber off! Is rubbing just a battle that is never won or should I cut? Also I will be lifting her another 2 inches soon to make it 6.5 inches of lift. I want to run 33's. What do you guys think about this situation?
You can see it really good here>> The tier has plenty of room to tuck up the the wheel well some more, but look at that bull bar IF I turn my wheel. I almst popped a tire the other day, the thing was taco'd! http://www.texj.net/xjayu7.jpg

I cut my ARB. I would definitely recommend it. I think you are right though, rubbing is a never ending problem. http://imagem.webphotos.iwon.com/1000025005/1000025005_3212002122005AM0.8939173

I heard that the 97+ arbs need to be cut or they will rub. If you plan on going to 33s you will definitely need to cut it. If you wreck that bumper and need a new one hint hint... get an ARB for a 96 or older xj they dont have so far back of sides. I heard alot of people use them on the 97+
How Did you take care of the sharp edges after you cut the bumber...ERSIII
You will probably use a cutting wheel to trim the bumper. Either an electric one or a pneumatic one. After you make the cut you can use the same cutting wheel to round the edges off a bit. You should cut it back far enough so that you never have to worry about the tire contacting the metal again.

I read of someone using a plasma cutter and they didnt have to worry about the edges

I used a plasma cutter. The picture doesn't show it very well. I cut the end piece off then cut 2" off the side of the bumper then welded the end piece back on. It is pretty hard to tell that it didn't come that way. I will see if I can find a better picture.

So would you guys recomend only putting 31's on a 4.5 inch lift? I don't want to have to cut my entire XJ apart just to fit 32's... plus it would be nice not to have to re-gear it.

ok, nevermind about getting that checked out..I thought it wasn't flexed that the other pics on the other thread were of you not flexing...bout to say graemlins/jawdrop.gif ! but since it was flexed..yes, you will always have rubbing..def. recomend cutting the bumper down a little..
STOP WITH THE OLD THREADS !

why would you have to regear an I6 with just 32's?

Ahhhh.....Just because.
To not rip out/destroy the differentials and transfer cases. They are made to run a 29" tire, and you're talkin about a BIG circumference change. I guess its kinda for the same reason you don't run 37's on a Dana30. Those of you with more and better knowledge than i, take this duck for a swim in Jeep etiquete. graemlins/squint.gif

The D30 rating is too weak to run that large of a tire. All the gears in the same rearend won't save you.
Regearing just gets your power band back in spec. Proper regearing will take a vehicle with larger tires back to stock specs (or better). When your tire dia is increased, you are reducing your overall gear ratio. Leads to crappy "performance" most of the time too.
For 31s on my stick which has 3.07s, I'd need to swap in 3.55s to get back close to stock. Not worth the change for that piddly amount. I can suffer with the crappy performance for a while (read: till I go bigger and really need to regear)
Help any?

With larger tires you will notice that each gear becomes "taller" (with 31's I shift a bit later than I did on 235's). It's not the city driving that really bugs me, it's the highway speed. I find myself shifting into 5th at about 70 mph, but there's barely enoguh power to maintain that speed. 5th is too high, all I ask of it is to be able to confortable cruise at 70-75 mph. Right now I'm either screaming in 4th or luggin in 5th. Plus the slower crawl would be greatly appriceated. icon_smile_big.gif
One way or another I'm going to regear lower this summer, axle swap is what I'm leaning towards now. 3.07 is just too high, 4.10 is what I'll most likely get.
Uh, yeah, that's what I meant, it just didn't come out quite right...
I am feeling the highway pain of the gearing too. Not that it was really that great with the 235s and the big, long hills we have on the Istates around here, but definately more noticeable. I rarely get out of 4th anymore especially around town and my short hwy commute (60mph max).
I haven't been able to get any really good data points yet (unhooked battery on both tanks... don't ask, repairs not mods.) since I stuck on the 31s, but it seems as though my mileage (knock on wood!) has improved. Most folks gripe about it worsening.
What's yours doing Static?
