Build your own Front Shackle Mounts

By Jeff Ayers

Front Shackle mounts:

First, I had originally made some custom tow hook mounting brackets using the stock bracket idea but making it fit some horizontally mounted downsized Chevy Blazer tow hooks. These worked well for awhile until I either bent the hook a little and/or tweaked the front bumper, which didn't allow enough clearance to install and remove a strap. I then built some shackle brackets to allow mounting removable shackles in place of the hooks. So far, these are working out just great although I haven't had to do any major pulls with them yet.

I purchased a chunk of 1"x2" bar stock, cut it to shape using a portable band saw and an angle grinder, drilled a mounting hole for the shackle and drilled two mounting holes to bolt the mount to the brackets on the truck just like a set of hooks. I had to tap the mounting holes in the shackle mount just like the holes in the tow hooks were threaded. After a coat of paint and some trimming of the front skid plate, the shackles were installed.
